seems like no one is taking into account gearing.. the zr1 has a top speed of 205mph and the gt500 has a top speed of not that much..

also it was mentioned that straightline was 10% of the R&D.. fwiw i have watched numerous c5 z06's constantly outrun c6 zr1's on autocross courses as well, so that was not part of the R&D either..

you buy the ZR1 because you can and none of your friends could.. you buy the gt500 bc you couldnt buy the ZR1

That's great! I would like to see both cars from a dig on slicks. The mustang just isn't gonna have the aerodynamics the vette does.

A pulley change on the ZR1 and it would be ugly (that would make the mods even)......but this is a Mustang website after all

The GT500 has an advertised top speed of about the same. Car and Driver (or motor trend) was only able to get it up to 190 something...that being said I don't think that's a big enough factor.

hmmm, that may be on paper.. but im not buying it.. and still its a matter of time//over//speed... in a standing mile you cant tell me a gt500 will be close to a zr1.. and im slowly becoming a mustang fan, but this is an apples to oranges race and if you'd take that mustang over the vette i'd at least ask you to take the dick outta your ass before you and your boyfriend drove off to chick-fil-a

You can only drive one at a time, so what's the point?

It's interesting they are close enough to have fun racing each other straight-line, but as previously mentioned, the ZR1 is more than the sum of it's parts. It can do everything well besides haul 4 people. The shortcomings of the GT500 would be readily apparent after a lap or two on a road course.

That said, most guys don't run on a road course, so for around town cruising and ripping it from a stop light, the GT500 does 95% of what a ZR1 can do stock for stock for 50-60% of the money. Not a bad equation.

I'm just glad we're comparing Ford's pony car to chevy's super car. They are still worlds apart, but at the peak of their current platform's design.

Honestly I think it's pretty obvious a ZR1 is a complete package. The shelby has a fucking incredible car for the money without any question, but to dismiss the ZR1 as overpriced is laughable. The ZR1 can hold its own against any top of the line ferrari or lambo for half the price. Yes, the ZR1 is for guys with deep pockets, but still have sensibility. The GT500 is for every guy - and I think it's amazing how powerful of a car for decided to make at the price point. But if money was the same to you, the ZR1 would clearly be the more complete car. As great as the Shelby is, twice the price does get you something. It out handles, out accelerates, out brakes, and has a higher top speed. And one thing I'll mention that I'm sure will probably make a few of you rage is another thing that money gets you is not a mustang. I've owned many mustangs and I loved them, but when it comes to spending this kind of money you can't help but realize the actual quality of the vehicle - it's foundation - is a 20k pricepoint v6 mustang with a bunch of stuff thrown on it. The ZR1 is a purpose built sports car from the ground up, no compromise.

I guess i have different views about the Zr1.. I drove in a 700 rwhp Zr1.. and once i got in it.. i was like "wow.. looks like my cheapie vette.. with zr1 on the speedo"..
on a road course stock it out stops and out handles the other vettes..but on the street? im willing to be 99% of people dont exceed the potential of a base coupe never mind a Zr1.

For me i guess, the Zr1 provides little bang for the buck since i couldnt give a damn about road racing.

That's always been true for all the ZR1's. They are race cars with license plates. I would bet a stock C6 coupe would do a number on a GT500 in a road course.

Call me crazy, but I'd personally rather have the z06 and it's 7 litre all motor engine, along with bolt-ons and a cam.
