assuming it was a real nade (which it probably wasnt) it would have thrown shrapnel at them. Rifle bullets tend to break apart when they hit water. Just the shear speed they travel at. Pistol rounds have a tendency to penetrate water deeper (I think it's deeper than 3 feet) because they are slower moving.
