  • Took a trip out to Balmorhea State park. Scuba pics and video.

My sister and I had been planning on going out to Balmorhea State Park for a while now. Finally did it on Thursday. Balmorhea is about 50 miles south of Pecos, so it's a hell of a drive. Loaded down my mustang and left at 4:26am, got out there at 11:26, dove, slept, then came home in the same day. Finally made it back at 3:300am last night, 23 hours, 1006 miles.

    Now for the goods.

It was and I wish the lake was bigger. Thing is that I like to road trip and I haven't been anywhere in a while. My mustang got 27MPG for the trip, so gas wasn't too bad.

Awesome! That looks really clear! What was the visibility? Shore dive? And from where? And do they have tank refills there?

Edit: NVM on shore dive. LOL...whole thing is a big pool.

Geeze that looks like some great vis for anything in Tx! I hear there's an observatory around there as well that's open to the public once a month. Gunna try and make it out there next month, been wanting to go for a while.

Mcdonald Observatory...its near Fort Davis. Havent been to Balmorhea since I was about 14 and I didn't get to dive it...just swim. Did you go into any of the underwater caverns? I would love to go back sometime.

I will be there week after next. It's a long way from anywhere, but it's a neat place. The observatory is open nearly every day, but it's just for certain tours. If you are anywhere near this area, and you like, or have not seen high desert areas, you should go.

A couple of years ago we loaded up and went to Balmorhea SP for a week. It was a blast and that spring water is COLD. We drove all around out there - McDonald Observatory, the Scenic Loop (like 60 miles of beautiful countryside) outside Fort Davis, saw the Marfa Lights. It was a damn good time and a cheap vacation.

Lol, yeah, it's a tiny little lake. Vis was around 50', maybe better. Yeah, there is a dive shop out there with air fills. Not like you need them though, I started at 3000psi and 45 minutes later I was at 2200PSI.

Vis is incredible. Constantly flowing spring water.

Underwater caverns? I didn't see any, so no.

Middle of fucking nowhere is the correct description. Nice open roads to go flying down though. I frequently saw over 100MPH.

Yeah, it's pretty damned cold. I have a good tolerance to the cold, so I was diving in a 3mm shorty, but even I was getting a little chilly at the end.
