                After looking at his location, he could have been in a spot that he would have fallen 10' or several hundred. Either way...

                  Looks like he was the lead climber, he was clipped in at various points up the route. He probably just didn't want to fall back to his last point when he was so close to the top. If you look around 4:10 you can see his rope going down to his last spot as well as he has a ton of gear which would be pointless to have if he was free climbing.

                    Can someone explain the rope he was towing? Was that anchored to a point maybe 10-20 feet below? Don't those type (rock and ice climbers) poke anchor points in the rock/ice every so often as they ascend?

                            Not sure why he was climbing directly in the water flow. I would think that would be the softest most unreliable ice to climb on.
