when you bruise, blood basically fills in the gaps through the muscle tissue etc. and that's how it will appear.
I ate pavement when riding BMX & took a handlebar to my groin when I was 17. The swelling was the size of a grapefruit, they observed me for 4 hours and finally released me. The ER doc said I was kept because the impact was so forceful I had a hair line fracture in my femur and was directly over the femoral artery, they were afraid I had damaged it internally... I was a coin flip for surgery if the swelling worsened.
2 days later the swelling was almost gone... however, the bruise it left was so purple it was almost black and shaped like Florida: it extended from my hip bone, across the front of my leg to the impact point (it was 5-6" wide) and down the inside of my thigh to within 2" of my knee.
So, what I'm saying is, pour some 'tussin on it bitch.
