Thursday night, about 7pm my wife and I were leaving College Station with both our dogs to go up to Dallas for a long Memorial Day weekend with family. About 15 minutes into our trip we t-boned a pickup (white chevy 2004-ish with half doors), we were going 65mph.
The pickup had a stop sign, and decided to try and cross into the median of the two lane highway approximately 30 feet in front of us. We were already in the left lane (closest to the median), and he just kept moving across the road as though we were not there. I always look for other drivers eyes -to make sure they see me in various situations. If they are looking elsewhere I pay close attention to their vehicle. The weirdest thing was that he and I maintained eye contact from stop sign to point of impact (the whole time)...
As he began to creep out I made a small maneuver into the median to give him space... he just kept creeping, and at that point it was time for brakes and was too late.
Airbags deployed, and I caught one of my pups before she went through the windshield (according to my wife). Airbags messed up my wrists, I am wearing splints and taking pain meds (no breaks) but I've broken them before... they sure do feel broken -and I'm a programmer (FML). Wife's knees went through the dash, she got beat up badly. Bruises like I've never seen before. Her foot is still swollen and it's been a week since. Her chest is still in pain too, clavicle and sternum are both very sore when she breaths. We've been to the doctor, got x-rays, the whole thing... I might send her to another for a second opinion.
That little 03 Corolla did its job. Hitting the airbags my wife and I both thought we were dead. I had no idea how hot airbags got, I thought the vehicle was catching on fire. After the wreck I immediately tended to my wife, she was sobbing and in serious shock. Got an onlooker to call 911. Got my wife standing and brushed off. Checked the pups. Made a video of our car, the skid marks, and got a confession on tape from the other driver. Got everything in order from towing and calling a friend to pick us up and get our crap, and then -after taking care of everything the shock hit me.
The police officers that responded to the scene had a hard time believing we were all alive. I think the manner in which our vehicle wedged under his slowed our impact.
Pups are fine. Car is totaled. Can't afford what we want right now. Our other vehicle is a two seater Jeep. Rental expires next Wednesday.
I'm ready for 2012 to be over.
