There was a Parks and Wildlife Officer standing on the dock and he asked me if I had a good depth finder. I told him I had a great one and he asked if I could motor around above the boat ramp and see if I could mark an SUV and boat trailer. Started at about 10ft deep and worked my way out and found the front end of the SUV at 32ft and the back end at 36ft. Trailer much deeper and hung over the edge of a ledge. Needless to say a diver and very large tow truck were need to pull them out. By the time it was out the trailer axle had ripped off on the ledge. The story I got was the husband backed the boat in and then hopped in the boat and put his wife in the SUV. He asked her to backup a little more. He disconnected the boat and told her to go. She thought she had put the SUV in drive but it was still in reverse with her foot on the brake. So she hit the gas and let off the brake and it went backwards fast. She went into panic mode and jumped out with it still in gear and down it went. This was a boat ramp on a very steep hill so not much to stop it. Only thing stopping it from dropping off the ledge was some huge rocks. The vehicle was a couple month old 4x4 Suburban.
I laughed, but good lord what a dunce.

Only thing embarrassing I did, was loaded a boat at Eagle Mountain Lake and the boat ramp was so steep, my one wheel peel could not get traction to get back up it. Had about ten people pushing me and I finally convinced them to just get in the back of the truck. Then I drove out.

Sometimes I think my father-in-law wants me to go to the lake with them just because I can back the trailer in the water with no problems and he is "that guy" that backs down and it starts getting cocked to one side and he stops, pulls up, backs down again. And this continues until he gets the trailer halfway straight on the ramp.

This is also the same guy that trims the boat all the way down when it's rough as hell out because he doesn't want to stand up and look over the windshield and get wet by the waves that are smashing the boat.

my first experience backing up a trailer was when i was 16 and i had to deliver a full size car trailer(empty) to my dad's friend's house. i had to back it up over a curb and park it next to his house on a concrete slab. the truck was a 66 chebby, so drum brakes all around, no power steering, 3speed on the tree with a shitty clutch. fun times

no i can back up any trailer into almost anywhere on the first try

                  So just for a count:

                  Ford gets stuck
Chevy decides to play bad ass and gets stuck.
Dodge decides to go out there and try and fails.
Tractor 1 decides to go pull all of them out and fails.
Tractor 2 has to start them moving.

I wonder how much dude with the boat had to pay them for their time
                  I wear a Fez. Fez-es are cool

Yep. Highly doubt the owner of the first vehicle will go through the trouble of taking out the carpet and washing everything down. It'll be a rusty turd in no time.

Not a whole lot of people anymore can appreciate how much work it actually took to drive a car from those days.

People should not be allowed to own boats, trailers, etc. without demonstrating they can competently back a trailer up without being a fuck up.

When I was 16, my grandfather called me to his house. I got there and he had set up obstacle course of sorts. said one thing i need to learn/master was the art of backing up a trailer. I spent the next couple of hours backing up and such. It was an invaluable learning experience.

Agree, I learned on 30' trailers and generators in the Army. It's not bad once you know what you're doing, but some people just assume they know what they are doing. Just like everyone thinks they are a good race car driver.
