I dropped a jet ski off the back of my trailer a few years ago. Landed in the grass and was really embarassing. I've been making fun of people for doing it since I was little.

My winch will get used at least a dozen times this summer to pull people back up. I should video some and add it here.

They had forgot to put the damn drain plugs in and that huge big ass boat didn't have a bilge pump. After 14 hours they finally got it floated.
Yes... We have an interim 30 minute parking loading dock so you can dock up after launch, put your truck and trailer away and go out. I can't tell you how many times people come back to a half sank boat. So entertaining. Our family joke is that we need to open a law office that specializes in divorce and put it right by the boat ramp... so many couples come away pissed it makes you wonder why they ever got married in the first place.

On a side note for those of you thinking of getting married. This is a great relationship test. If she doesn't hate you after launching a boat together, you found a keeper!

We aren't married yet but my old lady can launch the jet skis by herself. Haven't tried the boat. She's a keeper.

So, when launching a boat - is the goal just to get the trailer in just far enough for the boat to be in the water a little or should it slide off and into the water?

I started watching a lot more video of bloopers/screw-up and I can't see a consistent thing for the screw ups - other than the car is in the water/wet and can't get out with the extra weight.

Depends on the boat really. My center console fishing boat just needs to float a little to get off, the Master Craft I had a few years ago had to be way in the water because it took more to float it and it was a direct drive so the prop is under the boat and has no trim.

I've got jet skis down to a science. I don't ever get out of the truck after i back up to the waters edge and un-strap them. Tie a long rope to both and beach them without getting wet.

But, we have a private neighborhood cove with grass/ sand so I can beach them next to wherever I launch.

what I do is I back up the trailer all the way in except for the tongue but I have The side bumpers to where it goes right on the trailer every time. If you don't Have the bumpers you can get the runners just in the water then motor it up or winch it up.

Years ago I helped a buddy launch his boat. He got out and I backed the boat in. What he didn't bother to notice was the extreme algae growth on the ramp. The truck was 4 wheel drive, but had me backing in far enough that all 4 tires got on to the algae. AS soon as that happened the truck started sliding backwards. Rear axle ended up off the end of the ramp. Luckily it was only an old Bronco that wasn't worth much.

The only thing I forgot to do was remove the straps securing down the transom. Saw the boat and trailer start floating.

To be completely honest, I don't know why there are so many people with issues. Granted I only own a jetski and not a boat, but before that I have never launched a boat or even had experience backing up a trailer. I am sure there are differences from a jetski to a boat, but still very similar.

It all boils down to being prepared in my opinion. You have your precheck list of crap to do before even approaching the ramp regardless if you have a boat or a ski, and then you have a checklist of things to do once you are backed in. I didn't want to be that guy and read constantly the do's and don'ts to boat launching. I can pull up and get the ski in the water and truck parked in under 5 minutes and that is by myself...

Some of the videos you see on Youtube are just common sense.

Years ago up in Kansas I came back to the boat ramp at Hillsdale Lake after a day of fishing. There was a Parks and Wildlife Officer standing on the dock and he asked me if I had a good depth finder. I told him I had a great one and he asked if I could motor around above the boat ramp and see if I could mark an SUV and boat trailer. Started at about 10ft deep and worked my way out and found the front end of the SUV at 32ft and the back end at 36ft. Trailer much deeper and hung over the edge of a ledge. Needless to say a diver and very large tow truck were need to pull them out. By the time it was out the trailer axle had ripped off on the ledge. The story I got was the husband backed the boat in and then hopped in the boat and put his wife in the SUV. He asked her to backup a little more. He disconnected the boat and told her to go. She thought she had put the SUV in drive but it was still in reverse with her foot on the brake. So she hit the gas and let off the brake and it went backwards fast. She went into panic mode and jumped out with it still in gear and down it went. This was a boat ramp on a very steep hill so not much to stop it. Only thing stopping it from dropping off the ledge was some huge rocks. The vehicle was a couple month old 4x4 Suburban.

                              So, you can't ride?

I've launched both, and both are easy if you have a brain. Since most of the population doesn't, YouTube is full of this. It's sad.
