How do you manually shift or hold a gear?

My mom in high school had an old push button dodge dart, you pushed different buttons in the dash to select different transmission gears. Dodge has been flip flopping back and fourth for decade with stuff like this.

Which just goes to show that work trucks no longer exist as trucks are now a status symbol and need a host of "more shit to break"

            It's been a little longer than a decade, young'n.

We used to tool around in a 1962 Valiant with a push button automatic. That slant 6 would run a low 13 in the quarter all day long. We surprised many people in that ugly fucker.

looks like the one in the Jag XF that's been out a few years now. Had some issues with the first ones not shifting into gear when the electronics would fail...hahaha.

Jag tried to get fancy with it though so when you start the car, the shifter actually rises up so you can turn the knob...GARBAGE!!!!

Shit, my '55 Fireflite has a pushbutton 2 speed auto. They've been around for a hell of a lot longer than a decade (or two).

I would have to agree with this statement. Like Mechanical locker rear ends are the only way to go. None of this Auto LSD shit.

Auto LSD is fine, until you roast the son of a bitch.

I'm sure a higher trim level of the Ram has manual select buttons on the steering wheel.

there is no fucking way i would have a vehicle with one of those type shifters. i remember trying to help a guy with a newer 7 series. he was stuck in the middle of the road, car completely dead. couldn't even get it into neutral! apparently he had just got the car back from the dealer cause of a battery problem and when driving in traffic the car's electronics starting going crazy, the engine died and a few seconds after he put it into park and put on his hazards the entire car went dead. i was gonna help him push it off the road but it would not come out of park. i even slid under the car looking for a linkage to undo but i soon realized it wasn't an 82 chevy pickup where you could just undo the linkage and shift it to whatever you want haha

I was at a car show today and saw an early model ford pickup - straight 6 - only had the engine and the steering box under the hood - nice and simple. Next to it was a car that was jam packed under the hood. I'm not so sure that the old ways were so bad, and I definitely am wary of new cars and the cost to fix them when something fancy breaks.

One reason that I sold my RX8. Too much electronic shit that can and will go wrong. Drive by wire has the be the dumbest thing I have ever seen though. What is wrong with the good old fashioned cable?

I bet most if not all new cars have just a dummy shifter that is actually electronic.
