yeah the Navy broke a record last week I believe. I was giggling like a school girl reading the story and watching the vid.

I think that is they can get the technology in batteries and capacitors to the point that they can shrink down most of this equipment, rail guns will be the future.

Damn, according to wikipedia, that's a 7lbs projectile moving at approximately 7,875ft per second. That's 5369.292 mph. Fucking nuts.

Another cool little thing on the wiki page.

From that Fox article : "A single megajoule is roughly equivalent to a 1-ton car traveling at 100 mph. Multiple that by 33 and you get a picture of what would happen when such a weapon hits a target."

OK, I'm gonna ask a stupid question, so here goes.

If it is magnets propelling the projectile, why does it make a bang sound, and looks like there are flames coming out in the video, or did I not see it right?

Edit: is the sound the sound barrier being broken?

Yes. That's the loudest noise we hear from normal gun fire as well. I hear in most sniping situations, the bullet will find it's target before the noise can even be heard from said target.

the bullet left the gun at a speed of Mach 8 which released a sonic boom
