  • Significant day in naval history.

Today is the anniversary of the USS Iowa accident where one of their 16" gun turrets was overrammed which resulted in the detonation of the powder bags, with the breach door open. It killed 47 people. Pretty tragic. Here is a video of the explosion, doesn't look like much from the outside but the pressure and blast was enough to kill everyone in the turret. Also posted is a link to the wiki page with a lot more specifics. Just figured I'd bring it up. RIP sailors.

That's some sad shit there if what the Wiki says is accurate. But I hope my Navy brothers who died that day rest in peace.

Yeah, there were a ton of things that were wrong with the whole situation. Surprised that something didn't go wrong before that. It seems like in most navy accidents, after they are done and you see the report that someone should have seen it coming a mile away. People just get tunnel vision, or complacency.

RIP Shipmates. That was a sad day indeed.

Yesterday was a significant day as well. 69 years ago a P-38 shot down Admiral Yamamoto.

Looked pretty damn violent to me! Very sad day for not only the Navy, but the whole country.

Agreed that it was bad for the whole country too. And just watching that video, I wouldn't have thought that it killed 47 people. Also, it's hard to judge the size of those turrets when the only thing around it is other giant things, and lots of water. I believe that I need a Dr. Pepper can for a reference point.

They didn't even need to hook them to the ship. My understanding is that the BB's turrets just sat in their beds and rode on rollers. If one were to capsize the turrets would fall out of the ship.

Dolittle bombed the Jap islands 1 year earlier.

                      Yea

The gun blowing up sucked, Navy screwed up and forgot how to load the big guns in a safe way.
