Code Red: Shelby and Nelson Racing Engines team up for 1000 rwhp twin-turbo GT500 prototype
    9 November 2010 4,774 views No Comment

Back in August we reported that Shelby was considering some new models including a Mustang V6 model called the GTS and a twin-turbo Shelby GT500 based on the 2007-2009 model years. At the time the company had already built a prototype version of the GTS, making it fairly likely to be produced in the future, but we figured the chances of Shelby actually building a $150,000 GT500 producing 1000+ rwhp were slim to none.

How wrong we were. Over the last two years Shelby has been working with Nelson Racing Engines on a twin-turbo program for the GT500 nicknamed “Code Red.” The prototype car has been kept a secret until just a few days ago when NRE posted new photos and videos of the car.

Because Shelby hopes to sell the Code Red to customers, one of the mail goals was to make the car drivable on the street, despite being able to produce up to 1200 rwhp on race fuel. “It literally drives just like the factory showroom floor car,” says Tom Nelson. This was achieved with a few tricks like gear-based boost control. Essentially the driver can pre-program how much boost the car will take in each of the six gears, starting out with low boost in the first few gears and raising the boost in higher gears.

Another cool feature of the Code Red GT500 is the twin gas tanks. Offering “octane on demand,” the car actually has two fuel systems with a dual set of injectors for two different fuel systems and cells that run pump and race gas. “What happens is that the car will run on 91 until it gets into the boost, then the computer will sense it’s in the boost and will automatically add 50 percent additional race gas,” explains Nelson. “You can safely run higher boost levels without detonation.”

You can see a full list of specs for the Code Red GT500 prototype below along with a video of Tom Nelson explaining some details of the car and both him and Shelby American vice president Gary Patterson testing the car out on the street.

My favorite part is how it isn't dressed up like something from a Lund magazine.

Yea, it looks like a normal GT-500 on the outside. You would never expect 1,000 rwhp. I embeded the video per the sticky but for some reason it does not seem to want to load.

Why are they calling it "Code Red"? Did Ole Shelby have another heart attack?
