  • Well, I did the hard part today on the vinyl top install. Got the seams straight and the middle of the top glued on. Wasn't too bad, but it's kind of a bitch to get everything lined up without having the contact cement bond together. Especially since the vinyl just LOVES to fold up on itself.

As for the patch in the middle, I sanded it back down, reapplied bondo and got it much smoother. If the light hits that area just right, you can barely make out the shape of the seams.

Overall I couldn't be happier with the results so far.

      • Let that baby sit in the sun for a while to get nice and soft. It's much easier to work warm vinyl. Or you could keep a heat gun close by.

I have a heat gun nearby, but never had to use it. We will see if I have to use it today.

          • Sorry for the lack of updates, my Crohn's flared up and had me sidelined for a few days. So, I went back to the grind today, doing something very delicate, all hopped up on steroids, fortunately I didn't go ballistic and bash anything with a hammer. Rear window channel wasn't as lumpy as I expected, so that turned out good. The biggest thing for me is that the rust is gone.

Now I just need to get the headliner in, the back glass in, and new trim around the lower side of the vinyl.

Thanks. I am a little shocked myself. Installing the top wasn't all that bad of a job either. As long as you have an extra set of hands and make damned sure to measure the top right, it's fairly easy.

$150 shipped for the vinyl and $30 for the paint. I had the rest of the supplies in the garage from previous jobs.

You should dig that old Torino out. I was looking for one of those back before I found my cougar.

                          • Well, it has been a little while since my last update. My crohn's has been making me it's bitch and now the steroids are on the gang bang wagon, but I am making progress. Got the carb rebuilt, got a new gas tank with sending unit installed, and I just got the headliner installed and the back glass installed tonight.

I can't say that I am happy about the headliner, but I can't say that I am mad about it either. First time installing a liner with bows and the cheapest liner I could find makes for an OK result. The pics suck and you can see my silver insulation shining through, but that is just a camera trick. Gotta order a new package tray and new sail panels.
