Looks like I have to go look for that issue in a store. Car Craft's website is still showing November 2011 as the current issue. Do you remember what brand it was?

They should be vacuum. There's a small canister that stores vacuum for when the car is off. They can rust out and not hold vacuum. There should be a manual over-ride switch for those lights, too.

The manual over-ride switch is your hand. If the system loses vacuum they were designed to open by spring actuation.

There is also a (originally) a bypass valve in the vacuum hoses under the hood that allow the springs to do their job.

I love to see someone bring a classic, especially a Cougar back from the dead, but you may want to do some serious research before you get spend too much money on this project. From the rust in the floor pans and top, the quarters are most likely junk as well. Quarter skins for the 69/70 Cougars are randomly available and vary greatly in quality making them difficult to replace. Parts for the Cougars that are Cougar specific can be really, really expensive. If you really want a Cougar and are planning on keeping for it for a while, I say get after it. If you think you are going to build it cheap and rock it for a short time and turn it for a profit, you should look to a different kind of project. The Cougars, which I think are one of the coolest cars ever, don't reflect their coolness in what they bring on the open market. In most cases, you can buy a really nice restored Cougar for way less than you can build one.

That being said, I have built three of them so far and I love them. I just wanted to offer my .02. Enjoy.

I hate to tell you, but old cars are terrible daily drivers.

You get all these people smiling, waving, and giving you the thumbs up. Who wants that kind of attention ?! Just do like the masses and buy a Prius so you too can hate the world all while saving it !!

By the way, I just got the new carpet put in my '66 yesterday and drove it home. Sure is fun not having power steering and power brakes. It makes you pay attention a lot more to what the hell you're doing !

My best friend had a mint unrestored 69, with a 429/c6/4bbl. Badass cars, it has the pneumatic rape door locks too!

I think I have some random 69-70 interior parts (back seat, door panels, etc) for free if you want them.

I believe OranceChevyII does floorpans at his exhaust shop

Should be a 428 (FE)? No 429's in Cougars until '71 (same as the Mustang with the exception of the Boss).
