  • Pictures request : Smokey Yunick

I know there is alot of old school gearheads on the board that collect stuff and I was hoping you guys could help me out. Smokey is/was my wife's great uncle and I'm looking to put some stuff together for the family.

If you guys could help out with some of your favorite pictures of Smokey and his cars I'd really appreciate it.

On a side note, if anyone happens to know someone or somewhere to find some of his old cars I'd appreciate a heads up on it.

    Thanks in advance.

All of his race cars were a trademark black/gold color combination.

This is my personal favorite of his, the '69 Boss 302.

Modern NASCAR uses body templates because his Chevelle was cut down enough to get thrown out. This car is known famously as the "7/8" Chevelle, compare it to the stock one.

You would be surprised how much closer you are to the correct family spelling of the name when it arrived here in the States. Tracing the family history has been difficult because it was spelled so many different ways through the last two centuries and was really bastardized when arriving here.

Yes sir. Many, many rules were made and formed because of something Smokey did, or something to pre-empt something they thought he would do. A big part of the way NASCAR came to be was a direct effect from Smokey. The way he saw it was - "well, if there isn't a rule for it, then it isn't cheating." LOL, he was so awesome.

A few anecdotes I've heard over the years-

There was a rule about how large a gas tank could be. But there wasn't one for how much fuel line you could run. So, he had something like 30 extra feet of 1/2" fuel line in a car.

He added some fins to the pressure plate and ducting to the bellhousing of one of his cars. He told the tech inspectors that it was for cooling the clutch. What it really was, was pumping a lot of air up to the carb inlet, giving him 1-2psi boost at high RPMs.

While some inspectors had taken a fuel tank out of his car to get a closer look at it, he started the car up and drove it back to the garage. lol

Was Smokey one of the guys in NASCAR that was acid dipping?

Many of the forward thinking ideas such as that came from Smokey. For example when he first started drilling holes everywhere for weight savings. The first time the so called tech inspectors of the day saw that, they didn't know what to say. He enjoyed throughly pissing those guys off getting around their rules.

He talked his way onto the track on a Ford testing day with his Camaro. He was outlapping the fastest Ford by over six seconds. He has a famous unnamed Ford driver at the time so angry over it that he threw a wrench across the garage at Smokey. By todays standards that car would have been so illegal with the modifications they wouldn't let it near the track.

Smokey is also responsible for ram air induction and cooling ducts for brakes.

I had heard an anecdote revolving around a tech inspection he had (possibly with that camaro) where the inspectors spent hours looking it over for anything they knew he was up to. The inspector reluctantly gave him him his pass and leaned up against a panel and it crumbled like aluminum foil because it had been acid dipped so much.
