  • New treadmill desk..

Some of you know that I have a treadmill desk that I use when working from home. It did a damn good job of helping me get my weight down to 190lbs (from 210). However I hurt my back and found myself sitting more often. Now my back is a bit better and I've put a new treadmill desk together.

Bought a height adjustable desk base and added my IKEA desk top to it. Time to start walking while working again. I'm also going to get an exercise ball to sit on when I'm not walking. My posture has been really shitty and I'm looking to correct that....

BTW, the desk frame is sold at Geekdesk.com. You can also buy desk tops from them but it is cheaper to just buy one from IKEA.

The treadmill is from treaddesk.com but I bought it used. It is specially built for this application with a remote unit for controlling speed. The tread's deck isn't padded, but that allows for a raised floor to be put around it to easily roll a chair off and on...

    This is the raised position..

And the lowered position. It can actually go quite a bit lower than this.

New cost on one of those is $840. The desk frame is just under a grand.

We have a guy in our company that works from home(out of state) and you can hear him on conference calls walking on the treadmill in the background, I guess one time he fell and busted his ass while on the phone too, cant believe I missed that one LOL

Actually, the frame starts at $525. I bought the larger one that was $549.

You're right about the treadmill though, mine was $300, but it is used. You can also modify other treadmills for the same purpose but it can be a PITA.

I can see a bicycle @ work, but a treadmill?? I don't see it. I type and mouse WAY to much to think that would be "doable".

I think you generally go REALLY slow on it.

Probably a good alternative if you otherwise don't work out.

I normally type 60 to 80 words per minute. When I first started using this type of desk, my typing dropped down to 30 or 40 wpm. After a couple of weeks I was back up to around 80 wpm.

You never run with this kind of desk. In fact, that treadmill has a top speed of about 3mph. I usually walk at 1.5mph which is enough to burn 100 calories an hour. I can type just fine at that speed. However, when I get on a conference call, I speed it up to 2.5mph.

Ceyko is pretty much correct. I've never been able to get myself into the gym habit but I needed to do something. Just having a stand up desk alone is good improvement to your health. There are several studies that show that sitting all day is slowly killing you. Just getting off your ass reverses a lot of issues. My last physical had my cholesterol level below 200 for the first time in 5 or 6 years. My heart's condition has gotten a lot better as well. Ultimately I'm aiming for 175-180lbs..

Seems like way too much work, I would just change my diet. Im in the same boat and work from a desk and got up to about 210 and downloaded a app called Calorie Counter by My Fitness Pal and I got down to 180 just by watching my calorie intake. I slacked off when I hit my goal and got back up to around 200 so Im back on my diet.

BTW, I did do the treadmill and jogging thing everynight but ended up hurting my lower back doing it.

Apparently I was looking at the whole desk. That's ridiculous that the top adds about $300 to the setup.
