  • I want to paint my truck like this. What paint to use?

Iv got a 2001 ram sport thats green and needs new paint. I want to paint it like this until I can afford to have the whole truck line-x'd. What are my options for paint that will last? this guy used Valspar Low Gloss Black but Iv read that it will get chalky within a few months and I dont want that.

Dupont Imron Urethane. Its a single stage polyester modified urethane and comes in four gloss levels. Will not chalk. Epoxies chalk out. Urethanes do not.

I would think that all paints will get chalky after a while. I've seen some old rods with the flat look, but one of the guys I asked about it said he has to sand it down and retouch it every so often. Not sure if there's some secret to the trade, but that's the only info I've heard on the subject.

Either John Deere paint or Tractor Supply industrial black will do it on the cheap. The John Deere brand stuff is what alot of the hot rodders used with good results. Most will say the flat black is played out and with good reason but I still dig it!

Iv thought the same about the flat black being played out. But I really dig the way this truck looks. I think it would be a good choice for a work/off road truck. Really wouldnt worry about about it getting scratched and wouldnt have to clean it all the time.

Yup, if there is one thing I hate, its waxing a vehicle. This paint would be perfect for me too!

I think they make a flat clear, which is what would be needed to help with chalking/fade.

                      Different truck but same idea.

Yeah I don't know shit about paint. Use a lawn chair spray paint. That works.

I got a quote from line-x to do the whole truck and it would be $1800. I plan on it eventually but at this point I want to take a cheaper route that I can do myself so it'll look good until I get the line-x done. Right now it's got a bunch of small dents and scratches all over it and it looks like someone has just neglected the truck it's whole life(I bought it like this). Im going to pop some dents out and do some bondo work and I dont want to drive around with bondo splotches all over the truck so I figured I would just paint it that flat black color so it would look good until the line-x.
