Yes, this actually happened at Talladega in 1986. One of my guys was at the race and was talking about it the other day. Pretty amusing, especially the crowd reactions.

Here's a better pace car video. The story I heard is that in '71, no manufacturer stepped-up to build a "pace car" for the race, so a local Dodge dealer said he'd bring a new Challenger convertable, and drive it himself. He drives them to the flag and comes down pit road but stays hammered on the gas, loses control and the car hit the photographer stand and injured 10 or 12 photographers, but nothing serious. I'm pretty-sure after that, they didn't let any ol' dude off the street drive the pace car....
