  • Busted turtle? Fiberglass it! (minor blood)

We had a turtle come in that had obviously been hit by a car (see photo with tire marks on it). The turtle's shell was fractured top and bottom and had pieces missing from the side.

Did some research and saw that vets and reptile rehab places use fiberglass to make a permanent prosthetic shell. We pretty much only do wild mammal rehab, but the turtle appeared to be healthy other than the shell problem, so we figured we'd try. We cleaned up the wound and got the bleeding stopped. Then cleaned up the shell, got rid of jagged pieces that would cut or abrade his innards. After that, a light coat of resin topped with two layers of fiberglass cloth. Once dry, sanded it smooth. The turtle was last seen crawling into our stock tank and swimming away under his own power.

Tire track on shell (dark discoloration visible at top):

Broken shell with parts missing - A little blood (just keepin' it real):

    Good as new:

Damn, that RES got messed up. I can't believe he survived. That repair looks good though. I would have never thought about using resin to reform the shell. Was the RES too messed up to try and snap and hiss at you?

Ha. No, he was in good enough shape to snap at us anytime we got near his head. The worst part was that he was able to hook the wet fiberglass with his left front/left rear claws and pull it off. Ever fight with a turtle trying to claw off his dressing? Finally gave our daughter a pencil, and every time he'd start to slide his head out, she'd bop him on the head and he'd retract. We were able to keep him pinned in his shell long enough to let the fiberglass set up. He was a terrible patient.

I can imagine. My two RES don't want to be touched period. They hiss and snap at me the whole time I am holding them. I can't imagine keeping him down long enough to do the job you did.

Do you guys need any more RES in your stock tank? I have to get rid of mine. I just don't have the space for the tank anymore.

Fucking awesome. Being the asshole I am, I would have suggested putting some crossed flags on him before release.
