I doubt its anything that sophisticated, probably just placement before flight. You can do similar stuff with RC cars running on the same frequency. This is just a larger scale and a little bit of computer programming.

Ya...that was what I was getting at. Once you placed all the drones in a certain arrangement, the computer "knows" where they are in relation to each other (granted all the movements happen as they should).
