Depends. Most vehicles have electric windows these days and could be rendered useless once the car is submerged. The best thing to do is have a spring loaded punch (http://www.ehow.com/video_4940519_fi...ded-punch.html) securely fastened somewhere in the car that is easily available. Waiting until pressure equalizes may take far too long for the doors to open especially if there is more than one person in the car and God forbid, kids:

If they would have bailed out right after they realized they were in the water they would have been fine instead of panicking and staying in the car while the momentum continued to make the car drift further from shore. I was kind of wondering the same thing. He did alot of yelling at first, and then made the decision to go. Maybe he thought they should still be able to get out on their own.
