I think the rule of thumb is your shot skill set is reduced by 50% of what your skill is on the range when under stress.

Oh I agree. It's something like if you shoot palm sized placement "regularly", then when under stress, that doubles/triples so you have a palm sized area all the way around your original placement area.

I see it all the time. Some people have amazing technique and skills while in practice. But once under pressure in the presence of fear alot of people fold. Fear is very powerful emotion that takes time and practice to get acclimated to. In hand to hand combat, you can practice at a level of reality and intensity that will allow you to overcome your fear by becoming familiar with the combat. But with shooting, there is no way to really do that which I think is why that percentage of bad shooting among people with weapons who have no military experience/combat experience.

Fwiw for those asking for leg shots... Police train center mass, or triple tap failure drill. Two chest one head. At least, that's how we do it.

In hi-stress situations, you aim for the biggest target so you can end the threat quickly.

How big a target is the leg? Compare that to the chest.

And, even if you did shoot someone in the leg, if you hit the femoral artery the guy is dead within minutes due to bleeding out.

Cops aren't marksmen. Esepcially under stress. Don't believe the movies or video games that you can "choose your shot" because your can't. You aim at the biggest thing that's moving the least and pull the trigger til you are sure you hit it and the threat has stopped.

If you have to apply force, go all out until the situation is resolved.

Absolutely. CHL classes teach the same thing. You do not pull your weapon unless you intend to eliminate your threat.

If it becomes a deadly force situation, then officers have to eliminate the threat by any means necessary. If that means 10 shots, then so be it. What if he only fired 3, and missed all 3? Then his partner gets whacked in the head with a metal object.

I'm with ya, but in this case the dude fell to the ground after the first FIVE shots and then another 6 were pumped into him after he was on the ground. That's all I'm saying.
