Looking through reference pictures. It looks like I'm going to convert the front suspension to a mustang II type so that I can eliminate the strut towers. This will give me more room for the engine, plumbing, and details. I also plan to fab a new, smooth firewall. As for the gt500 kit, I'm thinking it is going to end up being a turbo drag car.

Sweet. In the real thing you have to do the same thing. Funny how those things work out.

I was worried at first that the engine was not the proper scale for the kit. Then I got to thinking about the few builds that I had seen where a 4V was swapped in and they had to modify the strut towers. I may need to set up something with you to get together and get some pictures of your car for reference photos for hinges and such

I took a little break from the '65 so I could start on the chassis for the 2010. I got to thinking while I was doing this, if I'm not going to use the Kit chassis for the 2010, I might as well modify it to fit the '65 chassis. It will save a great deal of work making the 34 year old Revell piece presentable and up to my standards. Anyway, here is the beginning of a pro mod/pro stock style drag race chassis in 1/12th scale for the 2010 GT 500 Body

Finally, the base of the chassis. It doesn't look like much right now

            This is the final goal

That is a picture from Clay Kemp's fotki album. He creates some masterpieces. I'm using that as a general guide for the chassis I'm creating

Got a little bit more done last night and this morning. I ended up re-doing the cross braces towards the rear of the main part of the chassis. Looking back at some reference pictures, it looks like these are typically done with a smaller tubing. So the old ones were torn out and new ones put in. I also got another pair of braces in that will help hold the center section of the chassis in line with the 2x4 bars better. The 2x4 bars may not be 100% accurate, however, they will help to serve as mounting points for the body once it comes that time. And finally, I got the main hoop for the roll cage in place

The first couple of pictures have the mod motor mocked up. I'm not sure yet if I will try and source an additional kit motor to base the build off of, or if I will scratch build something along the lines of a mountain motor. I think a Mod motor with a sheet metal intake and some turbo's would look pretty awesome in there.

I got a little bit done on the '65 so far. I started modifying the kit chassis from the GT500. I have removed part of the chassis tray from the fuel tank back, narrowed the wheel wells a little and "dove tailed" the chassis tray. It appears at this point, that the wheel base is the same on both kits, which means after removing some of the chassis tray it lines up quite perfectly with the '65 body molded some 34 years ago. This is going to make this a LOT easier than I had anticipated. I was afraid I was going to have to section the chassis and re-build details. The two issues right now are the rear wheels/tires, and the engine. The rear wheel wells are too narrow now to accommodate the wide rear wheels and tires. I picked up a 1/12th scale spare parts lot on ebay that included some additional wheels for this kit. So I have the option of using the front wheels/tires on both ends of this kit. Not sure if that will happen or if I will open up the wheel wells to accommodate the wider rear wheels.

These pictures are a bit out of focus, but it gives you an idea of how well the chassis tub fits the '65 body.

Here you can see how well the wheel base matches

Finally an overview with the engine set in place

Another quick little update. I did some work on the rear of the chassis. I had to open up the wheel wells QUITE a bit for the tires to fit between the body and the chassis. In doing that, I had to remove a large section of the molded frame rails on the chassis. With most of the frame rails and suspension mounting points gone, I am going to have to re-construct them. I removed the rear part of the chassis tray, essentially, the trunk floor. With all of the material removal, It also means that the frame rails under the trunk will need to be modified and moved. I have sectioned the underside of the trunk to move the frame rails where they will sit right along side the fuel tank. I intend to keep the fuel "factory" fuel tank, and plumb it with an external pump and filter, etc.

Here is a reference pic of what I want the underside to look like. Pretty much like I took a 1965 mustang shell and set it down on top of a 2010 GT500 chassis, a la sn65.

An overview of the chassis tray in its current state

A close up of the underside of the "trunk floor"

Finally, you can see the beginning of the modified frame rail additions. These will be molded in to match the "factory" frame rails and should mate up to the rail sections from the "trunk floor"

I apologize again for the blurry pictures, I'll get the batteries in the camera changed tomorrow

Are you just using Xacto knives to cut these up or something else? What do you use to create your extra pieces?

I use a variety of tools. For most of the work on this chassis it had been a razor saw and miter box. An Xacto has its place. I've got a file set with several different files, a pin vise with a multitude of small bits, various clamps, tweezers, and small pliers.

The extra pieces and scratch built stuff begins as various forms of plastic stock. Plastic sheet ranging from .010 to .080, various rods and tubes, some are hexagonal, most are round, half round has its place as well. The sections of added frame rail you see in the pictures above began as some rectangle tube, or essentially, scale plastic 2x4 sections.

Interesting. I had no clue they had all that stuff for model building. I've always wanted to do some sort of 4x4 model with a lift and bigger tires. I just have no clue where to start.
