  • Tried to do some HDR shots

I'm upset how these turned out. I don't know what I did wrong?? I shot these pics about 1-1.5 hours from sundown, 100 ISO, and I would bracket the AE every 2 clicks with 5 shots total. Plus Competition Orange is such a PITA to capture.

The backgrounds are mixed up because I HDR'ed them out of order.

Hope yall like my PINK Boss 302. lol

x2. Never understood some folks' obsession with it. All it does it crank up the contrast, it seems. Makes the photos look less like photos.

Well I saw some HDR pics of a Kona Blue GT and jizzed in my pants, so I thought I'd give it a shot lol.

You want to shoot right at dusk, when you don't get that harsh light from the side that you have, you want diffused light. Shoot brackets like you did but shoot your shutter bracket at about +2, so you should get one at say 200:f/3.5 and the other at 400:f/3.5 or so. I use Photomatix for HDR work, it does a better job than Photoshop. And it's really easy to use.

This picture was done with the same process. I'm not a big HDR fan, but the last set I did because it's a crowd pleaser.

I thought you want your aperture to stay the same and you change your shutter for HDR. Also, I used HDRTist for Mac, it was free.

sorry, yes your shutter. I typed that out wrong. I honestly don't see any clarification or HDR processing in either of those photos, either it isn't working properly or the settings were not correct.

But most importantly you want to shoot once the sun drops just below the horizon. Take a look at your photos, see how sharp the shadow is in the first few - that's not what you want. Take a look at your last few, the shadow is very diffused.. and the photo looks better and has proper colors. It's best to use HDR when you have some clouds or other features in the sky. Essentially it's used to balance our exposures of very bright to mid tone. If you don't have much of a brightness differential HDR isn't going to do much.

And it might benefit from a taller lense, shot at around 50-100mm or so.

Yes keep your Aperture the same! I don't really do HDR so I'm not to sure what youre doing wrong. Almost looks like youre skipping the tone mapping. Free software, well you generally get what you pay for. From a photography point of view the car doesnt look very sharp and the background isnt blurry which is leading to a cluttered looking picture. I'd pull the car away from the background if you can, i.e. trees, use a faster shutter speed and bigger apeture, then manual focus on the car.

You want to lower your aperture if your goal is to increase background bokeh. I'm not sure what camera you're shooting with, but both nikon and Canon offer a cheap 50mm prime lense which is a fantastic lens for exactly this type of photography. You can find them between $50-150.

This photo was taken at dusk with a 50mm prime at around f/2.8 or so it would seem. Diffused light, decent contrast, good color, slight bokeh.
