Tuna fishing December 2011...

With all the bad luck surf fishing this year, we decided to book a trip to Galveston to take a charter.

We are targeting tuna, but there will be a myriad of other fish to catch.

I ordered a Penn Torque 300 and a Penn International Stand up rod:





I can't wait to get this stuff out on the water to reel something in. I'm loading the Torque with 150lb Power Pro Hi-Vis yellow braided line.

Damn that is a good looking setup. If you don't have any luck catching tuna you could always go after lunker cat fish with that rig.

The 30hr tuna trip returned today with a great catch of:
17 yellow fin tuna up to 70lbs
61 blackfin tuna
618 vermilion snapper
1 gag grouper, 15lbs
1 amberjack
14 triggerfish
8 lane snapper
1 scamp grouper
1 redhind grouper
4 rockhind grouper
1 spadefish

We go fishing in Cabo every year... my wife landed a 45 lb yellowfin this year.

My ultimate goal is to go marlin or sail fishing.

You'll LOVE it. We still havent gotten a marling but we've gotten yellowfin and mako.

Here's a pic from this year when we got into a HUGE (like 100+) school of porpoise while hunting tuna and had marlin hit a lure but thats it.

Hope the weather works out for you. I do quite a bit of offshore fishing out of Freeport. Make sure to bring some diamond jigs and knife jigs for black fin. If it's in your budget might want to add a top water popping set up to your arsenal. Throwing top waters to busting yellowfin is my favorite way to catch them.

I've got some 8-12 ounce diamond jigs and butterfly jigs (the butterfly jigs are going to be painted with glow in the dark paint).

I'm also going to pick up a couple of poppers and that should be enough.

Those flying fish are great if the fish are keying on flyers resting on the surface. If you can get on the stern and let one drift way back it can produce. Frenzy angry poppers are a great sinking popper for both yellowfin and blackin. I really like the glow in the dark one and they're only 12-13 dollars. In the middle of the night if the fish go down and it gets quiet start chunking with blackfin chunks for yellowfin. Not the most exciting way too fish but it works. Hope you have a great trip I need a fix soon.

I would think a low profile gas block would be easier to deal with out there fighting mighty fish.
