The few times my dad actually had to spank me, he would tell me before he started "this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you". I think he was right, and it did let me know he didn't really want to do it, but he thought it was necessary.

While I believe in corporal punishment, I don't believe in the parents talking that way to their child. I have a paddle and my son only gets one swat from it. Pending the offense depends on how hard it comes in. But I don't agree with what the father or mother did as far as both of them wanting to get their hits in on the daughter. I heard on the radio that she has a debilitating disease, just don't remember what it was.

Now he has tested the waters on not taking the one swat. I simply put the paddle down, take off my belt and lay it beside the paddle and calmly explain the procedure. You can take one swat. Or I can get the belt and you can take 2-3 swats. But then we start over. You have to take the one swat from the paddle still.

He caught on real quick the easiest route. With that said, I have not had to discipline my son in a couple of years. (thank goodness)
