              I've seen lots of bow lathes but never one so primitive. Usually they are much larger and you power them by pressing down on a pedal. They can be very efficient.

              What is really impressive is the fact that not only is this guy using his foot to guide the skew, but that his is only using a skew to begin with. Most guys use a specialized cutter to make a free turning ring around a spindle. Lots of those cuts are also make be a gouge. This dude just has a single skew..

              It does look like he's using a softwood. I can't see him being that effective with any hard timber but that doesn't detract from his impressive work...

              Me, I'll stick with my Delta. I just bought a bed extension so I can do long spindle turning. I'm going to try my hand a making some custom baseball bats.

                  Hard would wood take a bit more time (see what I did there), and super sharp tools, but I bet he could do okay.
