My parents helped me with my education, as is the case with many students. I cannot help the fact that I had a good start in life, but I have worked hard to better myself. I am proud of my undergraduate degree, and it is the only thing I have that cannot be taken away from me...

well that and my arrogant attitude.

I wish my son could see the opportunity I can give him and do something with it. But he has to "be his own man". I guess I should be proud of that too, but it hurts a parent when they don't listen to your hindsight.

That is part of the problem, society seems to think a college education means living in dorms and partying and eating for free for 4 or 6 or 10 years. If you cut out all the crap, tuition and books really aren't that much, and any "college experience" buys jack shit without the end piece of paper.

People on both sides pick out the extremes of each side to cite as examples, but in the end I think we're all a lot more similar-minded than we think.

On dfwmustangs I feel like a minority that's more moderate than most of you. On other sites I feel a lot more right than the majority of posters.

I text back and worth with a self-described "liberal anarchist" chick I grew up with who legally grows medical marijuana for extra income.

She's about as left as anyone I've ever actually known in life. She thinks I'm a conservative nut, but I've still managed to find common ground with her and explain that I'm not as conservative as she thinks I am nor is she as liberal as she thinks.

Everyone seems to be against waste, abuse of the system (whether by the poor exploiting entitlement programs or the ultrawealthy exploiting tax loopholes), corruption on wall street, corruption in Washington, etc. no matter how left or right you see yourself.

Seems like the real divide in this country isn't so much because our individual views are so different, but because the people we listen to and get our news from (whether left or right) are such fucking assholes.

Each sides politicians and propagandists twist everything so much that each side believes the other is insane.

I spent 4 years in the Army and paid for college with the GI Bill, didn't seem all that difficult to me...

My 4 yr degree cost me about 18k. I could have gone to a more expensive school, but its just a name and i coulnt afford it. (parents paid first 2 years, i paid for school until i got a degree). If anyone sends a kid to school that they cant afford then they've failed right out of the gate.

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday signed a bill giving illegal immigrant college students access to state-funded financial aid, the second half of two-part legislation known as the "Dream Act."

The controversial measure, which passed the Democrat-controlled legislature on a party-line vote in September, represents a victory for immigrant-rights activists ahead of the 2012 presidential election. California is the nation's most populous state.

Only two other states, Texas and New Mexico, allow illegal immigrants to qualify for state financial aid for college, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

"Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking," Brown said in a written statement issued by his office.

"The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us," he said.

Brown in July fulfilled a campaign promise by signing into law a companion bill to allow illegal immigrants to receive privately-funded college scholarships. Together the two bills have been dubbed the "California Dream Act."

A federal Dream Act that would have created a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who attend college or serve in the military failed in Senate last year.

Opponents of the California Dream Act have argued that public funds should not be used to help illegal immigrants, especially as California faces deep budget woes that have prompted cuts in education and higher tuitions at the state's public colleges and universities.

"Citizens are having a hard enough time getting the classes they need now," Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Hesperia Republican, wrote in a September 9 letter to Brown urging him to veto the legislation.

"(California already offers) students in the country illegally in-state tuition; legally documented students from the next state over can only dream of such a benefit," Donnelly said.

California is one of about a dozen states that allows illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition, based on attendance and graduation from a state high school.

Under the new law, written by Senator Gil Cedillo, a Los Angeles Democrat, those same illegal immigrants would be eligible for aid from the University of California, California State university system and the state's 112 community colleges.

They could also apply for Cal Grants, which are cash awards based on academic performance.

For the 2007-2008 academic year, the University of California reports that less than three-tenths of one percent of the system's 220,000 students were immigrants who qualified for in-state tuition.

More than 68 percent of those 1,941 students were U.S. citizens or "documented" immigrants, according to the University of California.

At the state universities, the new law would affect 3,633 students, or less than one percent of the 440,000 students enrolled in the current school year.

Of the nearly 2.9 million community college enrollees, 34,057 would be affected

i went back to school in my early 20's after working a few years and living at home saving money to pay for school - i scrimped and saved to live and learned the value of a dollar - these kids are just the modern day hippies. they have 3.9 GPA's, but getting A's on tests doesnt mean you have common sense.


I dont know how many people I have talked to went to community college and lived at home like I did, then went to a cheap state school. In the end, does it really matter what school you go to? I thought that the end result was to get a degree - doesnt matter where but just get one!!

and look at the degree's these people are getting these days - I knew a girl who got a degree in archaeology - sure its her "passion" but she drives a dump truck for the city she lives in because no one will give her a real job - now she's thinking of driving a semi

I dont meant to sound like an ass, i guess i just thought about this. I got a bachelors in mechanics - im good at it and im in demand - but its not just the degree that people want, its the fact that im willing to work and put effort into it. I dont know how many kids ive hired and fired that didnt want to work - they just want to sit on their ass for 50 hours a week and get a paycheck. hell ive got grown men working under me who want the same thing

all in all - we are raising a generation of stupid and lazy kids - Ive always had a job, and worked 2 in college - i cleaned toilets, i dug ditches, i built fences, i mowed grass, i changed oil - anything i could do to make a buck i did!

ive been out of school 10 months, i have a decent amount of cash saved up, i drive a beat up old truck have no debt and im doing just fine. still live at home too - sure its got its downside, but at least im saving money for my future - not being stupid like soo many kids out there

maybe i should write a book called get off ur ass and get a job....and no you dont need a $150/month phone, cable, internet, and all the other expensive things.....and its called a bicycle and ramen noodle

Or maybe a system like Social Security. Or maybe a million other ways. Fuck if I know. All I know is that our country is full of lazy, worthless, blaming pussies. We are the laughing stock of the free world. Just thinking outside of the box a bit, I know how hard it is for the fanatical right to do.

Maybe if the government didn't completely waste 95 cents out of every dollar it collected, then some of these other programs would have a snowball's chance in hell to do some good.
