oh, UpOnOne, I forgot to mention yesterday, the most important thing you absolutely have to watch out for with an XJ is the unibody. If any of the doors are difficult/sticky to open or close, or the trunk, run. Most serious wheelers with an XJ get unibody stiffeners to help prevent the unibody from deforming from offroad use. If a XJ is being sold without doors, there's a reason for it. And its not because it "looks cool". LOL

Haha 10-4, appreciate the info. If I were to get one, it would have to be like that white one and not abused.

Does anyone have the hookup on any JK jeep parts? I need a good rear bumper with tire carrier to get this weight off my tailgate. Even though I am only running 33" the tires I have weigh about 75# each and with a wheel they are over 100# each. I really like the shrockworks stuff but man its pricey. $1500 for a rear bumper/tire carrier with one jerrycan bracket is HIGH.

I started a Bestop last night and it is actually very nice and solid for 300.00. Plus it just sways out when you unlatch your door like any other time. I did a lot of research and these almost always got good reviews. I almost had mine done in an hour. I need to drill four holes and tighten every thing up.Had I not just installed seats and a highlift mount I might of finished it. LOL

I don't really want to drill more holes in the body. I Iike the idea of a bumper/tire carrier just not the price tags that are put on them.

                      • I just joined the club...bought this 96 XJ over the weekend. Very clean inside and out...owned by an older couple that towed it behind a motorhome. Has seen very little offroad use...he said he only bought the 4x4 b/c they are best for towing with an auto trans...just having to put the transfer case in neutral.

Its a plain-jane model....manual windows/locks, no cruise control, tilt or anything like that....it doesn't even have a center console. It was very well kept, came with a lot of maintenance records and such. runs & drives excellent...showing 136K on the odometer, but unknown exacty how many are actual driven miles since a lot were put on it being towed...the old guy said that he sold the motorhome with 72K on it, and this thing was towed behind it just about all of those miles.

Plans are to find a factory center console, probably a 3"-4.5" lift with some black steel wheels and some 32" or 33" tires (don't want to go too crazy b/c I plan to use it on the street a lot too). I'd like to either fab up or buy a rear spare tire rack, and also a safari rack for it....and then we'll see what else.

That's what sucks about the mechanical odo's. On TJ's they don't rack up miles.

I guess it's kind of a mixed bag b/c there is still wear & tear on them being towed down the road....albeit not on the engine/trans, but being dragged down the hwy is still putting wear on the suspension and whatnot.

A friend of mine used to tow a Chevy minivan behind his motorhome, but he had one of those cutout collars put on the rear of the trans for towing, so his speedo gear didn't turn either.

yeah.. leaf bushings, ball joints, diffs, and yoke seals/bearings are about the majority of what wears. Overall it's still low mileage. And honestly 136k isn't SHIT for a 4.0L. I bought my TJ with 120k on the ticker, and she's still on her break in.
