What's REALLY sad is that I actually did that once, successfully. My first car was a 1979 Plymouth Valore and it would leak break fluid like water through a colander. I had forgotten to check the fluid level one morning on the way to school, circa 1989, and sure enough..... no brake peddle. As I rolled up to the red light I dropped the tranny through the gears and slowed considerably. I could tell I was about to rear end a BMW..... (I think it was a BMW, MUCH more expensive than my POS one way or the other.) The only thing I could think of was to open the door and try to stop the car. Luckily I was doing like 5mph and actually did get the car stopped. Now, was it my Fred Flintstone effort that made the difference or the drag on the tranny I'll never know. But let me tell you, the PANIC that insues of not being able to stop a vehicle does very VERY weird things. (E-brake wasn't hooked up because I had to swap the rear end to get the damn thing to run..... That got fixed promptly.) In short, you'll do what ever you have to do to keep from having an accident. Next time.... I'm flooring it to try to get to an open field, stretch of road, etc. My left foot was QUITE burned and the shoe was worthless. (Air Jordan in 89 FOOL!!! WTF?)

Interesting but funny story Darren. I'm sure you did not hurt the stopping situations, panic and adrenaline can get stuff done if controlled.
