I was making around 50k at my last job, when the economy tanked, all the money went away. I couldn't even afford the gas to drive the 30 miles to get to work any more. So what did I do? I took a job selling auto parts, making less than I did in high school. We don't get to go to movies like we used to, or go out to dinner every Friday. My weekends are spent at home instead of at the track, I drink Keystone, and eat store brand food. but we still have a roof over our heads and food on the table. Sure it's a big hit to the pride going from a suite and tie to a uniform with your name on the shirt, but you do what you got to.

I am scared shitless on one hand to have to find a job here soon and will feel guilty voluntarily quitting the job I have on the other hand. I think it will be selfish of me to leave this job to come home and have to join the 9+% (on paper) unemployed. But I can not stay out here forever as life continues to go on without me. With that said I know that when I get home and look for a job, pickings will be slim and offerings will be low.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

(who shows up to a job interview with a sack of Arby's sandwiches, and eats during the interview?!?) And its a decent job too!

The problem is that there are too many people out there that just flat out don't want to WORK. They just want a paycheck fucking handed to them for doing nothing. Not to mention they are getting unemployment as long as they show an "attempt" to find a job... even if they get an interview and don't show up, they can still list it as an attempt.

            No sympathy here.
i had mixed feelings on this, but you opened my eyes!!! i have had several interviews here, some no shows, hell i had someone ask me for a card because they wanted to say they came by to look for a job for unemployment(i did chase him off) i was looking for a few techs after a month of looking i found two, but for 30fh with 30h guarantee you would think i would have had more people wanting the job!

Hell I took a $70k pay cut last year and blew through $35k in savings. Just got a job 3 months ago but no commissions yet. it's tough out there but there are jobs, I still get emails every day for interviews.

We all say that but in reality places won't hire you when you have advanced degrees because they know as soon as something comes a long you are out of there.

What are you hiring for? My wife's cousin graduated with an air-traffic control degree and can not find a job. He is applying for anything and everything from installing Dish Satellites to working freight at UPS.

I know a process engineer that went through that problem when his employer laid him off.

He quickly realized that he should just leave that information off of the applications. He wound up with two less than stellar jobs that paid his bills and allowed him to stay out of his savings.

If you want it bad enough, you'll get it.

I've got a degree in physics and mathematics. I almost made myself permanently homeless because of my, "I've got an advanced degree, I will hold on until I hear form this company or that company". At one time, I had more than 175 applications active from coast to coast. About the time I lost the roof over my head, I realized that without any relevant work experience, or any experience in a technical field whatsoever, and having not completed my Industrial Engineering degree, I was screwed. So I got a job making minimum wage, put a roof over my head, and I am struggling through it
