  • Even scientists with advanced degrees can become homeless.

55 year old Maurice Johnston lives in Boston, by way of Cleveland. He has a Masters Degree in Plasma Physics from Dartmouth College, and a masters in Electrical Engineering and acoustics from Purdue University. He's worked over 10 years at Lockheed Aerospace & Aerodyne Research Corp. Maurice has taught in Science and physics, and took care of both his parents in their time of need. Maurice is very well spoken, (he sounds like Obama) and is very kind, so why is Maurice homeless.....

Although his situation is sad, I don't feel sorry for him. There is always work out there to be done. He could be a greeter at Walmart or flip burgers at McDonalds. Sure he isn't going to make what he wants and his standard of living will probably be below what he is used to, but at least then he wouldn't be in a homeless shelter.

Hell I started my own business (with help) and I could almost work 24 hours a day 7 days a week if I wanted. If there is truly a will, there is way to get it done!

There was a TCU professer that contracted mental illness and lost everything. He roamed the west side of the FTW area for years.

Yeah definitely sad. I can tend to agree about work being out there but by his comments it seems he was looking for something he enjoyed doing such as teaching or something similar and wasn't paying nearly enough.

I would imagine it would be pretty hard gulp to swallow if you have three degrees and to go to walmart to greet people. It is an option though.

Maybe he should go somewhere that's hiring, like Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania or North Dakota. Hell just about every business here has a now hiring sign up.

I graduated with my B.S.E.E. in May and in June I ended up moving from Texas to New Hampshire, about 45 mins from Boston, because I couldn't get a job in Texas. I started looking in January and by the end of the school year I only had four interviews. One was the Air Force for OTS, one was for Teradyne, one for SPEA, and the last for BAE. That was out of about a hundred or so applications.

I'm not "new" to the work force either...spent 6 years in the AF working EW systems, another 2 working as a Field Engineer for Northrop Grumman, and 3 years part-time in an organic semiconductor lab at school.

                Shits rough out there.

It may not be the exact job someone wants, but any place with oil right now has jobs. Hell there are people out here making 100k plus and didn't graduate high school, if you don't mind sitting on a rig there is lots of money to be made.

Charles Morse: You know, I once read an interesting book which said that, uh, most people lost in the wilds, they, they die of shame.
                      Stephen: What?
Charles Morse: Yeah, see, they die of shame. "What did I do wrong? How could I have gotten myself into this?" And so they sit there and they... die. Because they didn't do the one thing that would save their lives.
Robert Green: And what is that, Charles?
                      Charles Morse: Thinking.

His problem is his intelligence. He needs to shelf the heady outlook and get to work - in whatever form that is. And quit bitching about racism. Racism doesn't allow one to receive an over education.

I don't feel sorry for him. There may not be jobs he WANTS out there, but there ARE jobs. Hell I've been trying to find someone to hire for 3 weeks now, and 80% don't even show up to the interview, and of the 20% that do, 10% are lazy and 5% are just fucking idiots. (who shows up to a job interview with a sack of Arby's sandwiches, and eats during the interview?!?) And its a decent job too!

The problem is that there are too many people out there that just flat out don't want to WORK. They just want a paycheck fucking handed to them for doing nothing. Not to mention they are getting unemployment as long as they show an "attempt" to find a job... even if they get an interview and don't show up, they can still list it as an attempt.

                        No sympathy here.

^exactly. I went out and dumped a large portion of my remaining cash on a suit and accessories for a first interview.

Then again, I'm not drawing unemployment so interviews are like my time getting into the world series.
