  • Landscaping questions and cost.

I realize I am gonna get a lot of "your house is small and chitty" comments but I am hoping to get some serious advice.

As some of you know I have my house and 10 acres up for sale. Its been slow going so I think it would help if I had the yard done up a little nicer. I know jack about yard work and hate it with a passion. A friend and his brothers are pros and offered to do it for me but I about pooped myself when he told me the price. We agreed at $2300 but man it still seems like a lot of cash for a couple days work.

Just wanting to know if they are being strait up or tryin to hose me.

They will trim down this tree and clear out the old dead branches on the ground plus trim the tree till 10' up and he said "umbrella" shape it. Whatever that means?

Clean out all the growth thats around some very nice white rock flower bed here on the side and plant a couple bushes.

Trim down this big ass tree and take off its dead branch. (car is getting moved tomorrow)

Trim down all these trees to make them uniform and again "umbrella" shape them. Also trim the lower branches to be able to walk under them without ducking.

And then clean out the growth around the front and side here. Trim the rose bushes. Clean the palm bush and put in a couple more bushes on the side and lay down some red dirt.... I think he said red dirt. That whole area is also surrounded by a 8" tall white rock border.

So is $2300 about right for all that? They will also be trimming out the rest of the yard and around the fence plus haul off an old bed and old car shell.
Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

What do you mean what does umbrella shape it mean? What the hell does an umbrella look like when it is open? Alright, now picture the handle a trunk and the part the blocks the rain its leaves.

    I hope this helps....

I know what an umbrella looks like but my question is do they trim it so its completly shaped like one or is it just doming the top and still leaving all the lower branches ond leaves? Cause thats a chit ton of work to remove all the lower branches and it seems it would look like chit.

As I said, I know jack about landscaping. I dont like grass. I dont look at grass. I dont play in the grass. Id be happy if it was paved. I like cars and electronic gizmos. Mother nature can suck it!

It sounds like they're doing quite a bit of work for $2K... I don't think you're getting hosed. I wouldn't really say you're getting a smoking deal either, seems like a fair price.

PS I think what they're doing will really clean up the place and make it look more attractive to potential buyers.

Is there a reason you have 3 dishes and an antenna on the roof?

But yeah, I agree with UserX.

LOL, no shit. Take some of that crap down! Or move it to the back of the house.

Hughes Net is the one on the side and that was the only place it could hold a solid signal. On the roof every time we had winds it would get screwed up. The other one above it is Dish and yeah, I will have them remove it. Then the one on the right id my HD Direct TV dish. So one dish can come down. Also they are taking the old ass TV antenna down.

I went up there to take it down once and lost footing onthe ladder and was laid up with a bad back for two weeks so I said screw it.

Are you sure you're going to be able to recover that cost in the sale?

Is that packing tape on the far left window in the last pic?

No, its painters tape. Bird ran into the window and left a good size hole. The windows suck and I think a large enough grasshopper could break them.

I would say that's a fair price cause that is a ton of work. If its not conditional on the sale why waste the coin.

If you think will help with the sale I would only clean up the front focusing on the landscaping around the front. I don't think the tree trimming is going to help.

For perspective, my dad just spent $1500 to get his tree's trimmed. He has some HUGE live oak/red oak tree's that were over his house. They spent a day (3 guys) playing Tarzan (really) up in the tops of those tree's. It sounds like a lot of money until it's ME in those tree's. Sounds cheap! :-)

Opinions are like a-holes so here goes mine. Investing some time to make the first impression a better one will go a long way. The front of the house just looks overgrown with vegetation - a palm, what looks like some kind of juniper and I believe quite a collection of weeds. I would pull the palm and that really big Juniper looking bush right in front of the patio. Replant some stuff to fill it up, but don't have plants much higher than the bottom of the window. Whatever's growing right under that dish on the left - yank it all out. Replace the broken window pane and pull all the excess dishes down. If you want to pay someone, that's what I would have them do. I bet you could knock it out in one day for less than 500 dollars. I don't think trimming those trees is going to have near the impact as the appearance of the front of the house on a prospective buyer.

Seems like they're charging you a pretty fair price, but you could save so much money doing this yourself.
