To the OP, on a $5K budget, find you a nice XJ. Easy to work on, plenty of parts available and a large knowledge base.

Been wheelin' for a long time. This is some of the best advise you can get. Find a nice XJ for $3500. get some 31's and learn how to drive. Spend the extra $1500 in your budget upgrading and repairing.
If you can read this thank a teacher. If it's in English thank a soldier.

Yes, and it looked a little better when I had it. LOL

You know on the Bronco VS Jeep debate tt all depends on what you want. Jeeps are great because they are narrow, shorter, and lighter so they can squeeze around stuff better. Not to mention less sheet metal damage. Try to pull a trailer or boat with a Jeep though. LOL I like em all personally and have been resisting the urge to get an EB to play with. The best thing I like about my Bronco is the room inside to carry things including me. This is just my middle ground till I can get a brand new Ford. At that point I will build me a nother play Jeep. This was my favorite.

Oh and the money pit but it was baddd. LOL

Would agree on the rubi....at 30k + it is an expensive rig to tear up.

I like them all, too. I'd love to get an early Bronco and do something with it.

If $5k is the budget and you have some extra in reserve I'd recommend something like this

very few trails you couldn't ride in this Jeep

The tires are Goodyear Atd 2 that came from sams clubs (on there when I bought it) and you can google it. There are no knobs and it's far from a mud tire. We did moderate trails there and back, some of the rock climbing. As far as low gearing, I couldn't even get it into 2low b/c I didn't have time to adjust all the linkages after the 3" body lift. Here's a flex pic with bigger sway bars still hooked up, but you know what I just realized I don't give a shit what y'all think about my Bronco and what I do with it. I enjoy it.

                            Your transfer case doesn't have a selectable 2low. It has 2-high, 4-high and 4-low.

And his asking price is now down to 5k OBO so the OP could possibly get it even cheaper maybe
