Google doesn't cover it all. LOL! Remember...they ran the 426 Hemi in '64/'65 without putting it into a street car, too.
they put them in the aluminum front end cars that were street legal and available thru dealerships

This all stemmed from Dodge crying like a bitch because they had dominated stock car racing for a long time. The cammer shook them up when they saw how hard it ran in a test Galaxy.

Dodge pushed to have the cammer banned, along with other issues. There was a LOT of politics. Google doesn't cover it all. LOL! Remember...they ran the 426 Hemi in '64/'65 without putting it into a street car, too.
They ran the Hemi in Nascar for '64... until FORD complained. Then it was banned, as I mentioned above until 1966 when the Street Hemi was made available.

Petty turned to drag racing for '65 to maintain a relationship with Chrysler, which had every intention of putting the Hemi in a production car. Ford never had any desire to put the Cammer in anything, so why should it have been legal for Nascar?

Seems funny that you keep painting Ford as the victim here. They made a lot of great race parts, but back in the '60s, you at least had to be a LITTLE BIT stock in order to run Nascar.

When the government pays, the government controls.

Jesus, Danny. Every time I think I know a little about cars and automotive history, you casually rip out my spleen, jump up and down on it, and walk away like it was nothing. At least I've got more hair and way better looks.

Dodge just had the upper hand because of their domination in motor sports. Ford should have done what they did with the Boss, and put that SOHC in some Galaxy's for the street. It just wasn't a practical motor for the street.

            I don't care one way or the other...I know you're a Dodge guy. :-)
