Many other engines were banned from Nascar, including the 426 Hemi three times - or maybe 2.5, depending on how you look at it. It was banned in 1964 (not available in a production car), then in 1971 (358ci limit for "aero" cars - this is the 1/2-ban) and finally killed in 1974 (Nascar outlawed all engines over 358ci).
The Ford SOHC was only banned because it was never available in a production-line vehicle. If Ford had placed it a production car, it would have dominated. But by the time they got around to homologating a big engine, the FE engine series was no longer in production and instead they moved forward with the 385-series based Boss 429. Which is interesting because the car that was raced with that engine (Torino) was never available with it.

How many Top Fuel cars are there with six-foot-long timing chains? When the government pays, the government controls.

Again, this is not correct. The SOHC was never allowed to run in Stock classes, again because it was never available in a production car. There were quite a few successful SOHC drag cars, but the parts were always rare and expensive. With drag racing, this situation will not work.

Dodge pushed to have the cammer banned, along with other issues. There was a LOT of politics. Google doesn't cover it all. LOL! Remember...they ran the 426 Hemi in '64/'65 without putting it into a street car, too.Last edited by Vertnut; 05-09-2011, 02:24 PM.
