  • Storm Chasing Last Night

Did some storm chasing last night near Decatur. No tornados but got some okay pics. I was by myself and it was pitch black so I maxed out the ISO, had the apeture wide open, and was hand holding all these shots. Anyone else on here get out in the mix? I have a trip for work tomorrow or I'd be out in Baird right now. Looks like they've already had a few tornados on the ground out that way.

Yea the lightning was crazy. G/F and I went to dinner and just hung out in the Jeep after to watch the lightning (near the WalMart on 380) and it was quite a show! Was rather interesting on the drive home, though. The Jeep doesn't like high winds.

very cool man, I chased southwest of fort worth last night, got some decent pics too. We (those of us who like to chase) should meet up sometime and chase.

Head out to cedar hill for a cool light show. there is a park right by the towers out there.

Nice, did you go out on your own? Wish I would have seen this earlier, I left at about 630 to do some more chasing. Didnt catch much today though. Went up to Denton then back down to south Fort Worth. Lots of hail and lightning. Im down to meet up and chase though. I'll be going out of town tomorrow for a bit but i'll post up when I get back.

Theres a couple different ways to do it, but you are going to need a DSLR or a higher end point and shoot that lets you control the shot (i.e. Shutter speed, Apeture, ISO, focusing). It will be hard with a normal point and shoot, you would basiclly just have to get lucky.

I wrote in my post how I had my camera set (ISO 6400 shutter speed 1/125 or 1/160, apeture at 5.6. Picture style on landscape (makes greens a blues more vivid) and manual focus but I was in a moving car and driving thats why I had the ISO maxed out. If you wanted a cool scenic shot you would need to find someplace that you could see the storm and it not be raining, put your camera on a tripod, put it in "Bulb" mode (where the shutter stays open till you click it shut) and ISO 100. After youve had a couple lightning flashes in front of your camera shut the shutter and theoreticlly speaking you should have a cool pictue lol. Ive never done it but Id like to

What settings are you shooting at? And is that a filter you are using?

Last night I was shooting with the Apeture at 22 ISO 600-1000 for the lightning shots and I believe 1600 for the wall cloud shot. Shutter was set to "bulb" and most of my shots were between 10-30 seconds. I wasn't using a filter on any of these. Shot from a tripod on top of my car using a remote. Image stabilization on the lens was set to "off" (as using IS and a tripod can actually blur your photos)
