I've ridden one, and I thought they were pretty awkward. It turns a little like a snowmobile, if you've ever ridden one of those.

I thought the power was OK, and the brakes were pretty impressive. I could see it being fun for long trips, for sure, cause you can shift your weight around easily and there's actually pretty good wind protection behind the shield.

The most fun thing was doing hole-shot burnouts with it...but tires are expensive!

For a beginner who wants to put the wind in his hair without jumping straight onto a big bike, I would say it would be a decent choice.

      yeah i would agree.
      Sure the cornering feels differently...
but if you can corner a dirt bike right (say a the beginer level)
then you should know what to do on the street.

That or get a 50cc with street tires on it. Ride that bitch around til you get bored. challenge yourself, you'll learn what you need to master two wheels faster than you think.
The only downfall to this I can think of is that many pit bikes don't have clutches.
It would be good to learn the clutch ASAP.

Yep, clutch is the number one hardest thing to learn on a bike but it still doesnt take long. Hell anyone can ride a moped.
