Biker's crash video draws mixed opinions on who's at fault
There are a lot of opinions on both sides of the road regarding a video of a motorcyclist getting hit by a van recently in Dallas.
The stunt biker was recording his ride when took a hard fall after he was hit by a van.
He posted the video on YouTube, and that got a lively discussion going about whether the crash was a case of reckless riding or a van driver not sharing the road.
The video shows the biker, 25-year-old Michael Crane, popping a wheelie just before he gets sideswiped by the van as it makes a last minute exit.
Crane says the van took off as others stopped to help.
Aside from road rash, Crane says he has injuries to his hips and wrists.
The incident was reported to Dallas police.
Jason Martin of Lone Star Bikers trains at least 60 motorcyclists a week and saw the viral video before FOX 4 even called him about it.
“Either he didn't see him because he was trying to get to his exit, or he was a little upset he was stuck behind him as he was doing that wheelie,” said Martin.
Martin says it reflects poor choices by the van's driver and Crane.
“Yes, he was doing a wheelie in the middle of traffic, but had he not been doing a wheelie, he might have been able to react when he came over sooner and preventing the accident as well as the car's choice to try and get over in that exit at the last minute,” said Martin.
In Dallas County, TxDOT reports there have been 10 fatal crashes involving motorcycles this year, and 64 that have caused injuries.
Martin says riding motorcycles is all about balance, and when it comes to safety, he says, “Be wary of the people around you. They're not always looking for you.”
FOX 4 tried getting a hold of Crane on Thursday, but our calls and emails were not returned.
On his Facebook page, he's posted that his custom bike is totaled and that he's found a lawyer to seek legal action against the van driver.
