  • What would you consider "high mileage" on a harley?

I'm trying to assess what I should consider high mileage harleys. At the moment I consider a high mileage bike around 50k, and 100k is about where I consider most harleys needing a rebuild or time to start considering one. What's the general consensus on this?

Do sport bikes differ as far as mileage? What would you consider a high mileage japanese sport bike?

I wouldnt touch a 50k harley unless it's had it's engine overhauled already. A 50k sport bike would be better, but value on either drops off around 35k.

35k plus IMO. Most Harley riders don't put that many miles on the things, there are a few that ride the shit out of them though.

on my 77 Sporty: top end rebuild at 40K due to a broken spring. second top end at around 90k. Did the clutch at that time. Broke another valve spring at around 120k. Parked bike as it needs a total overhaul, bottom end, swing arm, front forks, etc.. retirement project.

I sold my '74 Superglide back in 2002 with nearly 200,000 on it. Bought it in '79 and rode the shit out of it. My only transportation for several years. Had to replace the clutch right at 120k miles, but other than that, it was unmolested. Ahh, the joys of the AMF years. I bought an Indian Scout new with the proceeds, and that turd fell apart inside of a year.

            My 98 only has 14k? I wouldn't buy one over 50k

Depends on the year and model.

Evo? They are good for about 100k or so if maintained. VRods also surprisingly.

That's a lot of seat time on a bike!

I consider anything over 20K too much on a sport bike. A HD is different. I can tell you, a CVO Road Glide with 60K on the odometer won't be allowed to get traded in at a HD dealership. Too many miles.

maybe if you dont know the history. my previous bike had near 50k hard ridden miles on it, yet properly maintained, and my current bike is pushing 25k miles. no problems
