  • The new hog.

Well it finally came home. My uncle bought it new in 1981 and it has been carefully stored and taken care of over the last fifteen years at my parents house. He was getting weaker and weaker for the last eight or so and finally passed a year or so ago. My mom handed it over today with the title and told me my uncle wanted me to have it. It is a limited edition 400 of a 1000 1981 FXS Lowrider, with 9k on the clock.

I wanted to flat out kick my dads ass also. His hard headed ass thru away the original seat, sissy bar, gas caps, and battery cover this year. The sissy had a knife welded in my uncle won in a bar fight. The seat that's on it is horrible compared to the factory. I felt like it was going to throw me off on the way home. I have found the gas caps and original battery holder on ebay. I guess I will go with a Mustang seat and I found a bad ass sissy bar with a knife in it. It will be really close to what my uncle had but a little more modern I guess. Now I just need a twin sport bike to finish out the stable.

I actually listed my Electra when I found out I was getting this. I pulled it when a guy got serious with the money. I never even let him come look at it. It rides so damn good I don't think the ole shovel will replace it. We will see when I get the new seat on it. It does have a velvet glide clutch and actually runs down the highway great. Spits and sputters from idle though till it hits the mid range. Carb needs a good rebuild I think and it might need the valves tinkered with. It does have a few leaks also. My Electra spoils me with not one leak and no mechanical issues ever.

Are those bars pretty hard to ride? Had some buddies comment on another buddies bike, about how hard it was to ride and it had those same style bars.

Pretty sweet though, alot cooler when there is some family history too I bet.

With the factory seat they were not terrible. With that god damn seat they are horrible. I really prefer them to be a it wider and straighter like the Electra. You guys would have laughed if you saw me push start it at 77 and 342 today. I think my battery is toast and it was easier then figuring out the kick start on the side of the road. I imagine it would have been like starting my YZF400 the first time.

Bitch don't make me change my personal policy on chasing sport bikes. I will make sure we get a turbo Busa to enforce with.

See the knife handle? This was in the first few years I believe.

New seat and bars. Also found the leak. It was a capped off line for the old oil bath system (Actually some jacked up piston jug vent). I reach in and just plucked it off and thought nice. New cap and almost no leaks. Maybe a very small spot every time I park it which is a victory. My new sissy bar with a knife in it, rear pegs, and maybe some leather bags I will be done. Man it rides fantastic now. Oh and the running issue before was all the electrical wires being loose.

There is absolutely no comparison in ride quality. It is funny when I ride this thing how many people come talk to me and recognize it's an old shovel.

bars are much better, looks better without the windscreen, but i actually like the solo seat. i'm sure the new seat is much more comfortable though.

edit: oh, and that toolbag needs to go!

Every HD needs a tool bag!

Replaced all the bolts in the bars that were stripped and have found the final oil leaks. The hoses going to the primary drive have them little shitty hose clamps that are loose I am sure. Also got the sissy bar in and it is finished. Thinking about leather bags and it replacing the Evo, then buying a Vrod again. I am pretty sure this thing has the Screaming Eagle kit from the factory also. I also learned that a super B carb has no accelerator pump. Thus the reason it sputters when you pump the throttle. Roll on the throttle and its smooth as glass.
