I owned a 06 rmz250 (same bike) and it was one of my all time favorite rides to date.

You can take the cap off the radiator when the bike is cold and look in it and see if the fluid is circulating especially when reving it up. but the only way to be sure is to take the water pump cover off and with the kill switch pushed down kick it over and if the water pump spins its working. I know a lot of manufactures used plastic ones and a lot of reviews show once they put in an aftermarket impeller ( boyseen or pro circuit) everything was fine.
