  • Buying first bike, need license info

Ive got the itch and im going to buy my first motorcycle this year. Looking at Honda Shadow as a starter bike, plus tthey're pretty cheap. I dig Harley Sportsters but out of my budget for the time being. I need to get my license firstt though. You guys have info on places that offer classes? I was told they fill up quick. My coworker and her husband have two Harleys that are very nice. They've been telling me I should get one so I can cruise with them on the weekends for over a year now. Plus it would help save putting miles on my daily. I decided I've waited long enough. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I took the Riders Edge class at longhorn harley in Grand Prairie. The normal MSC's you sign up for are usually 2 day, the riders edge is 4 day. 2 weekday nights in class and 2 full weekend days on the course riding. Its a little more since its 4 day, I think it was $300 but I got it refunded since I bought a bike with them.

I learned alot and had alot of fun. Once you get your certification just take it to the DMV and take your written test and your good.

Oh and Honda Shadows are bulletproof bikes! Not a bad choice as a first bike.

Another board member and myself will be taking it in a couple weeks if you want to take the same class. It's only $200 and two days on the weekend, so you won't have to pay for the guided tour of the Harley dealer...

Sounds cool but I don't want to be pushed into buying a bike from them.

There's two in Arlington, one at UTA's parking lot and one that uses Six Flags mall's parking (since nobody else does) and then in bedford somewhere if those two are full. I called and asked, they run about two weeks out on booking up.

Spend lots of your 'i want to ride' budget on helmet, jacket/pants, and training. Honda anything should suffice, you are already thinking right on that. You probably won't lose your ass when you re-sell it later.

After it rains, ride on wet pavement. Get a feeling for that, so you have a feeling for when the bike begins to lose traction. This will help you later when you are stuck riding in the rain (no big deal for our mates in the UK, I assure you).

Start off right. Put the emphasis on learning and prep.

some (maybe all) ride courses do test rides on wet pavement. Taking a corner on wet pavement can yield different results than taking a corner on dry pavement.
