I'm looking for a KX or RM65. I suppose a KTM would be ok, if it was a reasonable price. All the ones I've seen thus far are higher than giraffe pussy.

If rings/piston truly is the only thing it needs, i say not a bad deal. You'll spend 3-4 hundo on a top end and i'll help you do the labor for free. I'd be most concerned with making sure a) it still turns over cleanly and loosely and b) that the rings are in fact the reason it wont start. take a compression tester with you for good measure. obviously low compression = hard to start, which is totally ok. i'd just want to make sure that's the only thing that went wrong.

$300-400 for a top end? That's crazy. A piston/ring kit with gaskets can be found for less than $100. It is extremely easy to work on 2 strokes as well.

I don't know about kx's, but on my yz the piston kit alone with rings, piston, clips, and pin cost a bit more than 100 bucks. Also if the jug needs any work he may be in another 50-75 bucks. I know how easy smokers are to work on, as i own 7.

When i did the yz i had the cyl resleeved with a std bore sleeve, then a new piston kit with all gaskets and it was right about 370 bucks.

Yeah, I figured I'd be looking at 200 or so in parts. I guess it could get up there if the cylinder had to be replaced, or needs extensive machine work.

Those seem slightly higher than what I'm running in to around here, and out east.


I have heard the KTMs are ridiculously easy to work on, but parts availability concerns me, though I know literally nothing of them. I think that's why it concerns me.

I've always had Yami's, and have been out of the scene since about 2002.

You can get some pro-x for 74 bucks for the kx65, the wiseco set is 115. I'm used to buying pistons in pairs anyways, so i may have been thinking a bit too high still.

Even if you have to replate the cylinder, if you can get the bike for $500, it's a steal. But in all the years that I rode smokers, I never had to replate or replace a cylinder after seizing a ring...but you never know until you get inside. These smaller pistons rarely do cylinder wall damage. I would get the bike if you can and order a top end kit and be done with it.
