  • Selling a bike: test drive or no test drive?

Had a family member buy a Honda Shadow on a whim a while back, then lose interest in learning to ride. I don't know dick about normal protocol when selling a bike. Is it customary to allow someone to test drive before the sale?

I keep seeing stuff pop up in searches about the liability of test rides so what's the norm? As a buyer, would a contract stating if any major defects are found within 24 hrs of purchase results in a refund keep you from looking elsewhere?

As a general rule to CYA, only with cash in YOUR hand while they ride. Some people do also state that they'll verify that you have an "M" endorsement, as well. Then at least if something did happen to them, you can state you had full confidence in the fact that they know how to ride a bike.

With this time of year you'll be getting a lot of people looking for a good deal or bikes finally getting into their price range. Requiring the license may limit the number of individuals that are interested. Good luck.

P.S. Caveat emptor. Buyer beware. It's a used bike, no warranty expressed or implied. They should check out the bike fully before they hand you the cash. Now, if it blew up as they pull out of your driveway, that's a different story.

The last two bikes I sold (V45 Magna and CBR600F3), I made them give ME their license and then I hopped on my Blackbird and I accompanied them for a test ride for a few miles. Generally...if I were selling a bike and let them go on a test ride without myself going along on another bike....CASH IN HAND before they get the keys....they don't like it they can go on to the next bike. Too many inexperienced joyriders out there for me to risk them damaging/stealing my bike.

cash in hand is customary....but, like i said, if some guy just offers to start the bike for me and ride it down the block to show me it runs, then it's on to the next one...

i dont have a m endorsement, but it doesnt matter to me....if i cant test ride, ill find another bike

I have no set rule for this on a street bike. Asshat/no MC endorsement= no ride for sure. Mc endorsment and can talk motorcycle jargon then probably.

I generally done want someone to ride mine without handing me some cash. You lay it down, you bought it for my asking price. Ill hold onto it until you get back.

Also, on the last transaction, I negotiated with the seller up front, rode it, and then hit him a bit lower. That way if something happened, I wasnt tied to his asking price.
