  • Re-Ring a four stroke ATV

My son has an older (2001) Honda 250ex four stroke that has started to smoke a little. Is it is a bad idea to just re-ring it? There is also a top end kit that includes machine work on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Motor...sories&vxp=mtr
I have rebuilt several engines, just don't really want to spend a ton on this thing that he has almost outgrown.

Pull the cylinder and check the bore. If it's within tolerance and the crosshatching looks ok, the top end bearing is still good, and there's been no piston slap you could get away with just rings.

Probably best just to take the jug to Honda Kawasaki West and have one of their mechanics hone the cylinder just to be safe. Hell they did it for free for me it took about 2 minutes. Then go grab some rings if you are trying to do it the cheapest way possible. I just always got a new top end kit just to be safe. That way I wasn't back in the same spot a couple weeks later.

wouldn't hurt to check the valve guides, worn guides can cause smoking too.

the cylinder will be nickaseal or how ever you spell it and it sould have no scarring in it. If you see any flaking or deep scratchs that you can feel with your fingernail it will need to be replaced or replated. You will want to get it honed or light brush with scotch bright pad will normally work but do not use a regular engine hone on it because it will destroy the finish. I have heard nothing bad about just slapping rings in a 250EX but the new HOnda 450 is a no no to just change out the piston with out replacing crank and nall bearings. Hope this helps I think we have a service manual on the site that could help.
actually just checked it was no on the list but several others bikes are.
