Things are looking up. The mobile mechanic came today to look at it.

This man was dressed in a nice button up work shirt with his company logo on it, whereas the shit shop had greasy cut off sleeved shirts and holey shorts. His tool set included micrometers, calipers, and all other usual/necessary tools for a proper job. His labor rate is less than Full Throttle as well.

I knew I should have gone with him in the first place.

Hopefully, I will be riding it later today.

What you mentioned is usually always my experience at any shop, even for a simple oil change. I attempt to do shit myself even though I'm lazy, cause I know someone will probably screw it up worse than me. Last bad experience was with 2 body shops in Lewisville, shit work and blatant lies left & right. Ohwell, what can you do...

i'm not familiar with that bike at all, i have done some TL and SV stuff many years ago. honestly, his only mistake was not zip-tying the cam sprockets to the chain as he pulled the cam caps down. Still a stupid mistake, i also have 0 experience working on engines while in the bike, i'm spoiled.

I already figured on pulling the engine for you, if you wanted to mess with it.
If you feel so inclined, look into these engines on your spare time.

This year's Winter project is a custom made exhaust. I've already got my welder lined out with what I want. He will be making me a 2 into 1 stepped header.

Once I have sourced the cams, pistons, and whatnot I will be looking for an engine builder. I want someone who strives for excellence and I believe you are dickheaded enough to do nothing less.

Im a wiseco/JE/carillo dealer but i think everybody and their brother is as well, for piston choices. Im pretty sure thats going to be a plated cylinder and i hope they come off like the TL/SV stuff does. Thats where things get expensive, having to send cylinders and pistons off to millenium to be bored and replated. There you see how long these projects can turn into. I looked at the manual online and those things seem easy to time as they have bolt on sprockets. Sv's and tl's were pressed on if i remember correctly. As far as aftermarket cam grinds, i usually work with megacycle or dan crower. However not being familiar with that engine, not sure what the cams actually dial out at, so not sure what they really need.

Well shit. The guy worked his ass off and did exactly what I needed him to do, but he didn't get it dialed in perfect.

The low end of the rpm range is better than it has ever been, but full throttle sucks ass.

The cam timing and valve clearance is good to go, so I've got to fine tune it. I was hoping he could do it, but he was hung up on my air box mod.

I feel like I could give motorcycle work a solid go after seeing what people give their money away for. Good thing my shop already has an established workflow.

I got it closer last night. Just got to keep dialing in the carbs and sync.

It has been waaaaaaay too long since messing with carbs. Next bike will definitely be fuel injected.

synch should never be a problem unless somebody adjusted a screw they werent supposed to. I use a paperclip to synch carbs, on both flatslides and CV's.

I should never have had the mobile mechanic try to tune it. The carbs were damn close before he touched it. I've since gone back to base settings and started over, but I fear that some crud has made it's way into a jet. Hopefully not.

                      A paperclip? Do tell.

I've never heard of that one. We've been using a vacuum gauge that sits atop the velocity stacks to get them close. They were way off.

Tonight we will be using a "carb stix" filled with mercury to get them perfect.

This is my first bout with CV carbs, so I'm going through a lot of trial and error.

paper clip closed on the throttle blade, you can use anything, drill bit or whatever to get a set distance that all throttle blades are open. those mercury gauges pull from the low speed and high speed circuit, valve lash will also affect the vac gauge as well, but it's best to start with knowing all the throttle plates are dead even.

Ah. That makes sense. So simple. Thanks.

I appreciate the offer. Are they extremely familiar with SuperHawks? They are a very quirky bike, with some real hair pulling tendencies unless you have seriously studied up before lifting the tank.

Frankly, after dropping $1k in shop/mechanics fees and still having to work on it myself, I'm super leery of allowing anyone else to look at it. No one has been courteous enough to say they're not sure as to whether or not they can do it, but they sure love the fact that I never have to ask how much they estimate my bill to be.

I finally found the missing piece of my carb tuning puzzle, so I feel especially good about tonight's tuning session. She's gonna get a little more fuel, finally. Everyone has told me that the pilot adjustment is air only. IT'S FUCKING FUEL!!

Well, maybe I'll get to tune it tomorrow.
