  • Help with my 954

So I was riding my '02 954 on Friday when all of a sudden it starts sputtering and the engine cut out...as if it were running out of gas. And of course this happens right at the 121/635 merge, in the middle of all of the construction North of DFW airport. I pull over onto the 18" shoulder and, sure enough, the fuel pump isn't kicking on when I turn the key and/or try the run/off button on the right handlebar. Fuck.

So I try a couple of friends with trucks and even call to see if I had towing on my insurance (no dice). I turn the key one last time, and I hear the fuel pump kick on. So I start it and ride it about 1.5miles before it sputters and dies again. I pull over, and try monkeying with the wiring loom, but nothing. After a few minutes, the pump kicks back on and I ride about another 1/4 mile before it dies again. At that point I said fuck it.

I got it home and put a volt meter on the fuel pump. I figure if the fuel pump is getting full voltage and not working, then I need a new fuel pump. But if it's not getting 12V, then it's something in between the battery and the pump. Makes sense, right?

So as I'm starting to check it, I find roughly 13V at the battery, and around 10V at the fuel pump. I try the key, on/off, on/off, and the pump kicks back on. I put the meter on the pump, and it's almost 13V. I keep it on as the bike runs, and sure enough, the bike starts to sputter and the volts drop to 12, then 11, then 10 and the bike dies.

So anyone know what the fuck is going on with this thing? Something in the stator? It just seems like the fuel pump isn't getting enough voltage to stay running, so it doesn't seem like simply swapping out the pump is going to do anything. I wish it were that easy. Anyone have any suggestions??

    Thanks.

My 02' 954rr was having similar issues. Bike would start then lose steam at the fuel pump. I traced it to shorted wires, due to vibrating/rubbing through the insulation against the frame. Hope this helps.

Not sure if it would apply to yours but I know the CBR1100xx and 900rr had some issues with corrosion on some diagnostic plugs at the back of the harness that caused all kinds of problems after a few years. Mine hasn't had the issue but mine has been garaged kept all its life.

Thanks...I'll take a closer look at the wiring a bit later today.

This bike has had a pretty easy life too. Well maintained, stored inside and hardly ridden. But it is 12yrs old already. Wow, that doesn't hardly seem possible, but it's still a hell of a machine, regardless of it's age.

I would agree. sounds like you have just enough continuity to juice it up and start but then the vibration is moving around a connection until voltage gets low at the pump.

With any luck you'll find it pretty quickly.
          I like to do this:
          start bike
already removed all the crap in the way of wiring.
fuck with all the wiring along the path - battery to fuel pump relay to fuel pump.
if the bike starts to die , back track to what you just fucked with say 5 seconds ago.
Might help narrow down the location in the loom where it's loose.
(p.s. don't knock any new connectors off!)

Nope, haven't had time to fuck with it. What I'm really trying to do is find someone with a 954 fuel pump that I can use to see if that might be my problem. If I can find one, I could just plug in the quick connector, and if it fires right up, then that's the culpruit.

The fuel pump doesn't always power on. It usually doesn't. I can't get it to start right now, I'm thinking/hoping it's just the pump. I can get a used on on Ebay for around $100, so that wouldn't be too bad.

It sounds like how a weak fuel pump relay will act in fox bodies.

Here's a thread with a screenshot of what to check on your bike. His ignition switch was his culprit.

I would suggest checking the current draw your fuel pump is requiring, as well. If your pump is pulling high amps through a weak relay, then you'll get a similar issue.

The fuel pump showed up today. Just plugged it in, and it kicked right on. So I guess it was just a bad pump after all. Relatively easy fix. Might get to it later tonight if I get motivated all of a sudden.

Installed the fuel pump without issue and it fired right up. Replaced the fork seals and put a new Hyperpro damper on while I was at it. Rode it from Flower Mound to South Dallas today for work...still a beast!

Glad to know you got it working. We had a similar issue on my buddy's 2001 Gsxr 600 but it ended up being his ignition fuse. I thought ignitions were on relays only.

fuck my husky left me stranded today because of this fuel pump nonsense from the factory.

COFFEE EDIT: link to thread in the Tech Ref section http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3373 On the 08 and 09 Fuel Injected models, there...

BUt my odometer still says I can go 10 more miles!
fucking pump just would not reprime.
Should have done the mod already.
What a crock of shit by a bike assembled in italy! they can't even fucking zip tie something right ? DAYUMM!
