  • Another ATV Title thread.....

I bought an ATV last month and it came with the title. However, the title was from the prior owner (not the guy I bought it from). The title is signed by the original owner but dated last March (2011).

    I have 3 concerns:

    1) The date being so far out... will they charge me fees for this?

    2) It was raining and cold and i totally forgot to get a bill of sale.

    3) The original owner accidently wrote their name in the box marked "purchaser" where I would put my name. Can I cross this out and write mine without having issues?

Should I have any troubles with this?

Why are you even gonna do that. 98% of offroad vehicles in dfw don't have titles and most buyers don't care.

I guess I don't have to but I would rather have it in my name. If for some reason it ever does get stolen I would like to be able to prove that I did own it. Or if I go to sell it it is easier to get a good price on the vehicle when it has the correct title.

Why do you say they dont have titles ? As in they didnt come with one when they were built ? I've never personally owned a dirtbike/atv that DID NOT have a title.

To the OP - I wouldn't worry about it at all. One thing that people rarely do, is transfer the titles on off-road vehicles. I dont.

This is straight from my ass but I'd think if you reported it stolen, and have the original copy of the title, even though it's in a previous owner's name, they wouldn't give you a problem about it. They could always contact the named person on the title to confirm they sold it. I had a dirtbike stolen from my garage, and the Ft Worth PD recovered it (shocker). They didn't ask me to show them the title, they may have looked up the vin and saw that it was in my name though. All of my bikes, except for that one has either had no title, or has stayed in the previous owner's name. I don't like paying taxes and title fees on toys.

Well whats to keep the original owner from reporting it stolen and then claim I somehow stole the title ( that is still in his name) as well somehow?

I'd feel better if it were in my name.

You're going to have to get the original owner, previous owner, and yourself all signed on the transfer papers to get it into your name.

As for the date, you can get a "change of fact" (or some shit like that) form to have a later date put on the title to lessen the charges for changing the title over to you. Otherwise, you will be penalized for the date being almost a year out. I want to say it will be an $200 or so.

You got a good point on that one, but he'd also have to explain how you got the title with his signature on it. I at least make them sign the back in case of something like that. Plus he'd be in for a serious beatin'.

depends some dealers will just hand over the mso if you pay for the quad or dirtbike in cash. if it financed then it will get a title, that goes to the finance company till paid off.

most dirt people i have come across just plain lose their crap. you can always get the vin ran to find out if it stolen or still under lien.

and to the op you can get a "affidavit of fact" for the og owner to sign for the messed up title.

i just dont see the point in paying the government taxes on something that had taxes already on it.

i have only heard of people running into problems when going out of state, to like glamis, and the local authority run vins. the only dirt stuff i have ever had titles for were my kids stuff. al my stuff was clean stuff just didnt get titles or mso with them.
