The Aprilias are pretty sick, but still very expensive. I just saw one on CL for like $7k or $8k. And they're kinda heavy with that V-twin.

I love my DRZ, but honestly, I think the best overall compromise for a motard is the CRF450X. Electric start, kickstand, headlight/tailight, abundant parts, great power, lightweight, etc... I think it lands square in the middle of the factory supermotos that are too soft, and the converted race bikes that are too high strung and maintenance intensive.

    Off topic, but I'm bored.

So, if its still around after all the christmas festivities I'll probably go get it, otherwise I'll just keep an eye out for a cheap xr650 or dr650 dual sport or something like that.
1998 DR 650 Se for $1600 on Craigslist dallas

You can go old school with a 1981 Honda XL 500. It looks super clean with low miles, but the price is high unless you're looking for something of this nature.

Not bad. A crf450x motard would be sweet but by the time you buy the bike and convert it to a motard you're looking at 6-7k

Yeah, you're not too far off.

I'd go the route of finding one already done, and those can be had in the $4k range. Not all that easy to find though...they pop up on ebay every now and again, but you gotta be willing to travel.

Fuck yes. When I can find a mid late 90s cr500 locally I'm going to jump on it and motard it out. I've been wanting to do it for a while and might as well do it now.

That thing is probably worth the money...pretty fuckin sick! I'd love to ride it, but I'm betting it'd spit me off fairly quickly. Gotta be insane with all that power and the grip from the street tires.

My first bike was a KX500 when I was 14, then over the years I had two more. You get use to the power and its like riding anything else. They will pick the wheel up in damn near any gear with just a blip of the throttle. The cool thing about them is you really dont have to shift them a alot when trail riding. You can just add a little gas in any gear and up and over something you go. Dont ever and I mean ever try to crank one with a tennis shoe. I had one tear off half my shoe and bruise the entire back side of my calf when it backfired. Cool thing was I could do a top end on it in less then an hour. The piston was so big I had Wells Racing re sleave it one time. LOL

They did a quarter mile test against the mighty ZX11 one time and I think it beat it or was real close. They had to add like 40 lbs to the front fork though to keep the wheel down. Get you one of the AF500's I think you would like it.

There's a cr500 on YouTube that ran a low 10 at 120mph. Pretty sick lol.

Yeah an aluminum framed cr500 would be dope but I read that the kx is much more stable at hwy speeds due to the rake and also a little faster. I'm looking for either one, just needs to be inverted fork.

Have you ridden one?? I would absolutely never call that bike heavy. They weigh 260 which is comparable to any 450 but they have 20 more hp!!! Also better suspension and brakes from the factory. If money and maint wasn't a concern, id have one. Probably one of the most exciting bikes I've ever ridden, including crotch rockets.

if everything goes right, i'm picking up a 94 KX500 and a KX80 for 1600 tomorrow night. Should be a pretty sweet deal, supposedly both bikes are in good shape. I'll probably go ahead and order some DNA 17 inch rims and avon distanzia tires immediately, then start down the path of making it DOT legal.
